Life on The Crazy Side: The Urge to Crave Horror Movies One of America’s famous actress film director and producer Katie Aselton once said,” I don’t love horror movies with something surreal happening. That doesn’t work for me. What’s terrifying is something that could actually happen to me and what I would do. I don’t know how to throw a punch, and I’ve never had to do it.” This quote shows connection to King’s article. I’m starting to consider that everyone has a crazy side. Even though we are afraid of nightmares, we still challenge our fears. He wants you to feel fear, nervousness, sadness of an individual that is mentally ill. King stated, “I think we’re all mentally ill; those of us outside the asylums only hide it a little more better” (405). This quote effectively ties to emotion. We try to compare ourselves with others to make ourselves feel more normal. King also states, “We also go to re- establish our feelings of essential normality; the horror movie is innately conservative, even reactionary” (405). By comparing ourselves to the people in the movie it makes us feel normal. Sometimes people may feel if they are unusual they try to compare themselves to ordinary people. You may consider yourself insane King states,” matter of degree” (406). In short, King is trying to say that we all may consider ourselves insane but we will not let ourselves go over board to a certain extent. King compares a civilized adult to a childhood fear. He expounds his thought by saying, “It urges us to put away our more civilized and adult penchant for analysis and to become children again, seeing things in pure black and whites” (406). Even though King uses pathos through his argument he connects to the reader. He also uses evaluating points to support his debate. When a writer uses a situation you can relate to, it makes you remember the situation and be able to learn from it. Though his argument his connects with the audience through emotion.
