Good afternoon, in this assignment I would prefer to be a craftsman during the Colonial Period because it would have supported a need of England. For the most part, there wasn’t a lot of marketing during those times so; I would have a basic sales pitch and maybe a couple of printed documents. In short, my sales pitch would be, “we make our own and sale to our own”. For the part, this is contradicting to what the general purpose of the New world was created for which was that “England had planned the colonies did fall into the expected pattern of providing raw materials for the mother country” (Reich, 2011, p 147). During those times, England only cared about them and not the well being of the colonies, they interfered in all of the colonies

Looking at the early English colonies in the Chesapeake Bay region, it’s clear that the English had not learned any lessons from their experiences at Roanoke. Poor planning, a bad location, unrealistic expectations, flawed leadership, unsuccessful relations with the local Indians, and no hope of finding the mineral wealth the Spanish found in Mexico, all contributed to failure. The first colonists in the Chesapeake region were not only ignorant, lazy and unambitious, but their attempts were hampered before they had begun. However, a solution to these problems was found in a single plant: tobacco. Nevertheless, this cash crop ultimately created numerous problems for the colonists. The ignorance and indolent acts of the Chesapeake colonists to unsuccessfully restore the colony by themselves led to the demise of the colony as a whole especially regarding the planting of agricultural goods for food.
In the early eighteenth century consumer goods flooded American markets, the colonists needed to sell what they produced in order to purchase British goods that were beyond their ability to manufacture and therefore made them feel more a part of the British "empire of goods".
Most of early American colonies struggled to make a significant profit. It was not until John Rolfe perfected his recipe for tobacco in 1612 colonies began to seriously grow a single crop. It was then that Virginia became a plantation colony. It revolutionized colonies leading to the importation of slaves. This tobacco revolution lead to numerous advertisement campaigns. The advertisement presented is modification of what actually happened; the historical evidence in the chapter presents a different story. For instance, African American lives were influenced by tobacco, the idea of life being “a smoke,” and the increase of wealth of white people are shown in the image but are partially true.
In the 17th century, England was late when it came to the colonization of the new world. Which went through many changes before it was able to test the waters, forming the first settlements in the mid-Atlantic, Virginia. Under the guise of a noble mission given to them by King James I, the Virginia Company funded the first Colonies in Virginia. Years later, after perfecting their skills at surviving this new land, colonies in the south, Carolina were formed. In 1822, a group of Boston merchants and traders began their campaign to transform a riverbank below the thirty-foot falls of the Merrimack River into "the greatest textile manufacturing establishment in the country." These capitalists dug and improved the Merrimack canal, constructed machine shops, and built housing for mill executives, foremen and operatives. The cotton mills of Lowell, Massachusetts, and other New England sites began to employ the first female industrial labor force in the United States. During the late 1700’s, the United States was no longer a possession of Britain, instead it was a market for industrial goods and the world’s major source for tobacco, cotton, and other agricultural products. A labor revolution started to occur in the United States throughout the early 1800’s. There was a shift from an agricultural economy to an industrial market system. After the War of 1812, the domestic marketplace changed due to the strong pressure of social and economic forces. Major innovations in transportation allowed the movement of information, people, and merchandise. Textile mills and factories became an important base for jobs, especially for women. There was also widespread economic growth during this time period (Roark, 260). The market revolution brought about economic growth through new modes of transportation, an abundance of natural resources, factory production, and banking and legal practices.
I left about two years ago from your house as an indentured servant to go to Jamestown and soon, I was able to establish myself in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and now I am having an amazing life with my family. 1. The English organized the Plymouth and Virginia Charter Companies to begin their colonies. This resulted in the creation of Jamestown. The first thirty to forty years of the settlement in Jamestown were extremely difficult. This is exemplified by the "starving time" and the poor relations with the Indians. Two factors finally helped lead Virginia to success one was introduced by John Rolfe and the other had to do with the death of the Powhatan leader and rise of his more militant successor Opechancanough. Polk had a successful political career in which he held high ranks of authority in the Tennessee and federal government. He was also known as “Young Hickory” referencing his mentor and friend Andrew Jackson. He came into office at the age of 49 in 1845 in which his accomplishments would help make up the big picture known as America. James K. Polk was the determined and strong, eleventh president of the United States, who carried out all of his goals he set forth during his presidency, which included the expansion of the United States to the west, the settlement of the Oregon boundary, and the restore the Independent Treasury.
One facet of this unique system involved the numerous economic differences between England and the colonies. The English government subscribed to the economic theory of mercantilism, which demanded that the individual subordinate his economic activity to the interests of the state (Text, 49). In order to promote mercantilism in all her colonies, Great Britain passed the Navigation Acts in 1651, which controlled the output of British holdings by subsidizing. Under the Navigation Acts, each holding was assigned a product, and the Crown dictated the quantity to be produced. The West Indies, for example, were assigned sugar production and any other colony exporting sugar would face stiff penalties (Text, 50). This was done in order to ensure the economic prosperity of King Charles II, but it also served to restrict economic freedom. Before the first industrial revolution, England's economy was based on its cottage industry. Workers would buy raw materials from merchants, take it back to their cottages, hence the name, and produce the goods at their home. It was usually was owned and managed by one or more people, who were generally close to the workers. There was a good worker/boss relationship, which was demolished and destroyed by capitalism. This industry was efficient but the workers productivity was low, making costs higher. The longer it took one person to manufacture a product, the higher the price. Subsequently, goods were high in price and exclusive only to the wealthy people. The year was 1733, the demand for cotton cloth was high, but production was low. This crisis had to be solved or England's economy would be hindered. The answer came from a British weaver, John Kay, who invented and fashioned the flying shuttle, which cut weaving time in half. John Kay was a pioneer and his invention paved the way for numerous inventors. Although at first, many workers didn't accept machines, in fact, many inventions were destroyed, but what was inevitable, couldn't be stopped. The machines had made their way to England, and nothing could stop them.
During the 1800’s Great Britain’s empire stretched around the world, and with raw materials easily available to them this way, they inevitably began refining and manufacturing all stages of many new machines and other goods, distributing locally and globally. However, despite being the central ‘workshop of the world,’ Britain was not producing the highest quality of merchandise. When comparing factory-made products made in England to surrounding countries, most notably France, those products could not compare as far as craftsmanship and sometimes, simply innovation. It was suggested by Prince Albert that England host a sort of free-for-all technological exposition to bring in outside crafts into the country and also show their national pride.
