Extreme couponing is a growing trend which can save shoppers money if they are patient enough to devote hours to clipping coupons and learning coupon policies. According to Sheila Dougherty (2011) “Extreme couponing features people who spend way too much time in stores and pack their houses full of things they couldn't possibly consume or use at all” (para.4). For some extreme coupon shoppers, couponing is a way to save a lot of money on bulk staple items they will use later. Some couponers rack up on large quantities of items so they can resale them for profit. There are websites, informational blogs and couponing classes. There are also books for beginner couponers to read. Extreme couponing is a challenging and fun hobby which can save money as long as it doesn’t become a time consuming obsession. Buying several newspapers, organizing coupons, shopping at multiple stores can take a lot of time. This is why it is best for a shopper to know the difference between their needs and wants before shopping because it might not be worth it if the time is spent buying items that won’t be used anyway. The individual shopper should weigh out the benefits of couponing. Having items in bulk at home can be convenient. Extreme couponing not only saves money but saves shoppers less time in the store when they purchase items in bulk. When an emergency comes up extreme coupon shoppers already have what they need. Couponing can be a satisfying experience. Couponing is also a good activity which can be done with family. For example, kids can have fun cutting out coupons and organizing them into binders.
