Did you know that in the Civil War, more than 600,000 died due to disease and combat? The American Civil War, the bloodiest war in the history of our nation, was caused by slowly building tensions and differences between the North and South, particularly the issue of slavery. The war also happened because of the growing violence between the people who owned slaves and those who didn’t, which eventually led to Bleeding Kansas and John Brown’s failed rebellion. The Civil War could have been avoided because of the Compromises, the Dred Scott decision, and Bleeding Kansas. First, the Civil War could have been avoided because of the compromises. To start, the Missouri Compromise, the first one, allowed 30 years for other issues to be solved, but …show more content…
If these compromises had not been put in place and a bigger compromise aimed at completely ending the issue had been put in place, the Civil War most likely would not have happened because it could satisfy both sides’ demands. To end, if the compromises had not been passed and a bigger compromise satisfying both sides had been passed instead, the Civil War would not have happened. Next, the Civil War could have been avoided because of the Dred Scott decision. This case, initiated by slave Dred Scott, was based on the fact that he believed he could be free, as he was living in free territory. The court ruled, however, that he was not free, and African-Americans, slave or not, couldn’t be citizens of the US. The court also ruled that Congress couldn’t decide slavery’s legality in the territories, which opened all of them up to slavery. If this case had never been launched in the first place, tensions between the North and South would not have reached an all-time …show more content…
Bleeding Kansas was an act of violence initiated in Kansas after the Kansas-Nebraska Act, in which popular sovereignty was decided as the solution to slavery in the Louisiana Territory, which was split into Kansas and Nebraska. Northerners hated this, as it repealed the Missouri Compromise and allowed slavery in a much larger area, which scared them. Because of this, many groups went to Kansas to sway the vote in their sides’ favor, and during this time, many of the groups decided to fight each other over their competing differences. If Bleeding Kansas and the Kansas-Nebraska Act had never happened, the Civil War might have been avoided because by then the tensions were too high and anyone coming into office would’ve been seen badly in the South. This is because after this, Lincoln won his presidency, and the South was outraged, with many states deciding to leave due to the fear of their citizens losing their daily well-being, like slavery. In conclusion, the Civil War could have been avoided if the Kansas-Nebraska Act and Bleeding Kansas had never happened. The Civil War could have been avoided because of the Compromises, the Dred Scott decision, and Bleeding
Essay #1 The political crisis of the 1850’s is one of the most underrated influential decades in US history. Many people talk about the 1920’s and the 1940’s and 50’s; however, much of that history ─ especially of that between the late 1940’s and the late 1960’s ─ was predicated upon by the crisis of the 1850’s. To understand its importance, one must understand its composition, its origin, and its effect. The crisis of the 1850’s, predicated upon the furious debates of slavery in new western territories
The biggest war that ever happened was the Civil War. This was the most deadliest, and hurtful wars between the North and the South. This war lasted for four years straight from 1861 to 1865. So many events led up to this war which made it so brutal. I believe that the events that took place to start the civil war could have been easily avoided by just a little communication that they did not use around that time. I do not believe everything that happened in those four years should have happened
in the direst necessity and, if compelled, will use them only with the utmost restraint.” On the other hand Machiavelli wrote in Prince, “Francesco Sforza became Duke of Milan from being a private citizen because he was armed; his sons, since they avoided the inconveniences of arms, bec...
People should realize that war is "part of human society" no matter mythic or sensory; it is first and foremost death and "gross human cruelty"(Hedges 26, 23). Chris Hedges separates mythic reality and sensory reality, in his essay "War is A Force that Gives Us Meaning," explaining that "in mythic war we imbue events with meanings they do not have" and "in sensory reality we see events for what they are" (21). In one of this year films "Letters from Iwo Jima" directed by Clint Eastwood, the sensory
struggle. So much so that many historians have called this time period the “General Crisis.” This century saw conflicts as never seen before, not in magnitude, scale, or number. Europe at this time saw the 30 Years War, the Fronde, a large scale French peasant revolt, and the English Civil War, an altercation which involved the overthrow of an established monarch and regicide. As if that was not enough, several catastrophes were running in the background, even while the blood was spilling. Famines struck
to the Spanish Civil War had a noninterventionist policy by the French government. To start, Jose M. Sanchez’s main argument in the international Catholic response to the war was that, “No event of political or social significance since the beginning of the nineteenth century engendered such heated religious debate among Christians worldwide as did the Spanish Civil War.” The war signified a Catholic united condemnation for or against the war but the politics involved with the war led to an ideological
concession of power towards the plebeian class. In this short essay I want to look closely at the first of three secessions that the plebeians threated in order to achieve their aims towards a fairer society. To do this the essay will be split into three sections; the first highlighting the position of the orders within Roman society immediately following the end of the Roman monarchy, the second examining the concession that had been made through that secession and the third briefly looking at what
The Emergence of Civil Rights in the 1950's The civil rights movement is the title given to the concerted effort to gain greater social, political and economic equality for black Americans which, it has been argued, emerged in its most recognisable form during the 1950s. To many, the civil rights movement was one of the greatest reform impulses of the twentieth century and its many victories have included such things as the Supreme Court decision in 1954 which declared segregation in public
British- Irish relations over the past three hundred years have been troubled. There have been many tensions caused by religion in Northern Ireland and Britain's unfair rule of Northern Ireland. The British are guilty of many of the indignities suffered by the Irish people. They are also guilty of causing all of the religious and territorial conflicts between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland. The division between Northern and Southern Ireland dates back to the 16th century. A succession
that initiated widespread activism in literary embodiments. These protests transpired in the midst of World War II, and continued through many national tragedies, creating an artistic movement known as American Modernism. The modernistic style which proved to be a unending campaign, was the most influential creative crusade from a social, economic, and political standpoint. Indeed there have been claims that the movement discluded the African-American society, was built from privilege, and was ultimately
We are all aware of the tragedy that took place in our nation from 1861 to 1865. The Civil War resulted in needless, devastating deaths of thousands of soldiers. What we might not be aware of, however, is the number one killer throughout those years. More soldiers died from this single calamity than battle wounds or blood loss. The catastrophe that tragically affected more soldiers than any other element of the war was disease. Diseases did not only affect the soldiers in a tremendous way. As I
Introduction In my essay I would like to examine the idea of Cold War being an inevitable event or an events which could have been avoided. The end of World War II was the key element, because it did created freshly minted world with the US and the USSR standing against each other as two superpowers trying to surpass one another. Another important factor was their nature, which I would like to examine more closely from the USSR point of view and of course from the US point of view. I consider understanding
In this essay I will set out to debunk some of the facile and often fallacious arguments put forth by our leaders to justify our current and antecedent military involvement in the Middle East. I will begin with an analysis of western intervention in the middle east from 9/11 up until the present. The arguments under scrutiny will be from a wide range of influential westerners and think-tanks, but they will contain the same message: A direct call to arms against the supposed worldwide threat of Muslim
A Look Into the Chicago Race Riots The Civil War was fought over the “race problem,” to determine the place of African-Americans in America. The Union won the war and freed the slaves. However, when President Lincoln declared the Emancipation Proclamation, a hopeful promise for freedom from oppression and slavery for African-Americans, he refrained from announcing the decades of hardship that would follow to obtaining the new won “freedom”. Over the course of nearly a century, African-Americans

He previously served in the military during World War Two, but was relieved from duties as a result of his lectures about white supremacy to his fellow comrades, which is stated in the novel, “ resigned from the army after being reprimanded for indoctrinating his troops with right wing propaganda”(Doyle 96).
