The everyday world brings harsh conflicts and strong willed people that oppose it. The corruption in society helps bring out the good in some people and the bad in the rest. No matter how many bad people in the world there will always be good-hearted, loving and curious people that will help bring back the light to the world. The bad in the world helps some people realize the true character and goodness inside of them and can help them reflect back onto their character. No matter how big or small a decision might be it will bring you closer to knowing who you really are. She went blind as a small child and this added more hardships to her life than other people had to endure. Her father was a locksmith at the Natural History Museum of Paris, and when everyone escaped from Paris he was given a precious diamond called the Sea of Flames to protect. However, quickly after they arrived at Saint-Malo he was arrested and never heard from again, thus leaving the diamond for his daughter to protect. The diamond allegedly had “magical powers” that would bring a person eternal life, this brought about a man named Sergeant Von Rumpel who was looking for the stone to cure him of his terminal illness. The allies come to attack the village leaving no one able to escape, this brought Von Rumpel to search through Marie-Laure’s house to find the diamond, this forced her to hide up in the attic with the illegal radio. She comes to realize the true power of the stone, and that it only holds greed and selfishness. She comes to the conclusion that she doesn’t want these characteristics so she throws it into the ocean never to be found again. “The keeper of the stone would live forever, but so long as he kept it, misfortunes would fall on all those he loved one after another in unending rain….Who would willingly part with it?” (Anthony Doerr p 429). They both possessed an extensive sense of curiosity and wonder which was only boosted by the conflicts in the war. Marie-Laure’s blindness along with the loss of Madame Manec and her father, and the burden of keeping the Sea of Flames only enabled her true self into shining which is a smart, independent and appreciative girl. Werner Pfennig had to hide that fact that he believed in different philosophies to keep himself alive during his travels throughout Europe and during his school days. By the end of their expeditions they both ended up in Saint-Malo they showed bravery and courageousness as well as strong faith and curiosity while they were trapped. Every obstacle they faced molded them into better and stronger people. The theory that conflict leads to individuality and and reveals someone’s true character is proven in All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony
