Coraline’s Idea of a Perfect School Helix Coraline constructs an effective email by utilizing all rhetorical appeals, to convince his parents that he should attend a public school.
To begin with, Coraline is able to effectively appeal to pathos with emotional word choice so his parents feel sympathy towards him. Since the audience is his parents it is fairly simple to implement an emotional appeal. Coraline describes his feelings toward the issue when he reflects that “ I think of all the fun we could be having together, all the times we’re missing” (Coraline 1). The author applies effective terms such as “fun” which allow his parents to understand that private schools lack this important element. Coraline continues to persuade his audience by articulating, “I’ve been regretting that decision everyday since the first day of school” (Coraline 1). The lack of an ethos appeal causes his argument to sound, in a way, incomplete. To begin with he states “I know you probably won’t believe me on this, but I decided to go here on sort of an impulse because of the excitement of getting accepted to such a highly regarded school” (Coraline 1). In this excerpt, instead of attempting to improve his credibility through better grammar or appealing to pathos instead, he simply ignores it. Additionally he acknowledges his absence of credibility again when stating “I know there are grammatical errors in here, it might not flow very well, and I probably jumped around quite a lot” (Coraline 2). By sharing this information coraline yet again proves he is incapable of being reputable.
