Coral reef ecosystems are among the most diverse, valuable, and complex ecosystems on the Earth. These ecosystems provide biodiversity, seafood, medicinal opportunities, recreational value, coastal protection, and so much more (Bryant et al). Coral reefs are not only important to the environment, especially considering a third of all marine species rely on them in some way, but also to the environment. Coral reefs provide jobs in various industries that produce billions for the economy such as fishing, tourism, and recreation (Collins). Although coral reef ecosystems are highly important, they are facing an ever growing risk and dying off at increasing rates. The loss of coral reef ecosystems will fundamentally change those marine environments …show more content…

This includes pollution, overfishing, mining coral, and collecting live coral for marketing. Of these activities, pollution, has one of the largest impacts because it increases the effects of climate change and is a result of coastal development, agricultural and deforestation activities, dredging, leaking fuels, and sewage plant operations (NOAA Staff). All of these human activities are causing climate change and as a result is creating widespread coral bleaching. Coral bleaching is caused by oceans warming. As the oceans are warming, they are becoming acidic, causing the coral reefs to absorb more carbon dioxide and release their algae, called zooxanthellae (Collins). Zooxanthellae are essential for coral reefs because they not only provide the coral reef’s color, but also their food (Dengate). Coral reefs will release zooxanthellae if the ocean temperatures are too hot or too cold. If the temperatures remain extreme, the coral will die but if they return to normal, they can survive off of the little algae that may remain or new algae that may return …show more content…

Their major efforts come in terms of creating the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Coral Reef Task Force (CRTF). The NOAA works towards conserving coral reef ecosystems through satellite imagery. This organization believes that research, monitoring, and restoration are necessary to protect coral reefs, but there is a wider need for legal mechanisms such as marine protected areas (NOAA Staff). The CRTF was established in 1998 to protect and conserve coral reefs. It is responsible for mapping out coral reefs, monitoring, researching causes of coral degradation, and promoting conservation and sustainability (NOAA Staff). Furthermore, outside of the regional actors of the South China Sea, the United States has actively engaged in preventing China’s dredging activities. The US has called on China to stop building artificial islands and that they will continue to assert their right to navigate in the sea. The US has also been challenging China’s claims to the sea by sending B-52 bombers and military vessels to the sea (Reuters
