The movie She’s the Man is a romantic comedy directed by Andy Fickman, and has a controversial plot on what is right or wrong. The main character Viola, played by Amanda Bynes, attempts to prove her old school wrong, but her way of going about this causes the controversy. The film, She’s the Man exemplifies unacceptable behaviors of trying to prove others wrong about a soccer game, which turns into interfering with relationships, gender equality problems, and lying to friends and family. People tend to think that proving themselves should demonstrate good morals, but this film does the opposite of that. Viola breaks up with her brother’s girlfriend dressed as Sebastian in a public restaurant in front of many people(She’s the Man). This act makes Viola or Sebastian seem more like a jock, and at that point Viola starts to finally fit in and gain friends. Viola also starts to like her roommate Duke, but Duke doesn’t know Viola is pretending to be a boy. Duke has always had a crush on another girl named Olivia, who started liking Sebastian because the real Sebastian is in a band and she found that attractive(She’s the Man). Multiple characters in the film have a complicated love triangle, with a twist of Viola pretending to be her brother and no one knowing.
Gender equality became an issue in this movie as a result of Viola and her teammates being denied a chance to try out for the boys’ soccer team at their school after their program was cut. They were told they are not as fast or strong or athletic enough as boys are, and therefore, they couldn’t try out. This issue of a lack of gender equality is what motivates Viola to dress as her brother to attempt to play for the rivalry school’s soccer team.
