Prior to discussing the controversy of BDSM, I must first explain what BDSM is. To sum it all up, as I know it can be overwhelming, I will quote what David M. Ortmann, a well-known sex therapist, defines BDSM as. “Well, the term BDSM is an acronym, actually it’s a compound acronym, derived from the terms Bondage and Discipline (B/D), Dominance and submission (D/s), and Sadism and Masochism (S/M). It serves as a sort of umbrella label, if you will, for forms of sexuality that incorporate restraint, pressure, sensation, and elements of power exchange between the engaged parties.” (Ortmann, xiii) is how he defines it. In a healthy BDSM dynamic, it is all of these things. Safe, in a BDSM context, means that the involved parties have agreed on rules and limits and know what they are comfortable with doing and what they do not wish to do. Of course, limits and rules are always subject to change, which is why communication is crucial. A safe word or signal (a word or signal not commonly said or done during sexual practices, such as pineapple or a word in sign language to signal that someone in the involved party is uncomfortable and wishes for further acts to cease) is implemented to minimize risk. Communication, rules, limits, a safe word/signal, and coming to an agreement on these things helps to ensure the safety of the involved parties. Sane, in a BDSM dynamic means that all of the involved parties are mentally stable, aware of what they are doing, and the possible risks involved. Consensuality is the most important factor in distinguishing BDSM from abuse. Consensuality in a BDSM context is that, again, you are aware of what you are doing, understand the possible risks, but want to do practice it regardless. Abuse does not require consent, whereas BDSM does.
It is common that someone who does not know anything about BDSM other than the stereotypes, will think that it is all about whips, chains, and pain, but that is only a small part.
