1. Content/Ideas: Content/Idea is essentially the backbone in good academic writing. It is the point in a literature piece as it provides the reader with the message which the writer is attempting to convey. This entails that content/ideas needs to have a good supporting facts and data, especially in an academic essay. It also require for content/ideas to be interesting to read and unified in terms of concreteness or fullness of said ideas. Ideas is the core of writing, and being able to convey it fully will certainly help one’s academic writing skills.

Organization: Good academic writers more often than not would put extra attention towards the organization of paragraph and essay. Organization of paragraph and essay ensures the quality of an academic essay as well as the comprehensiveness of the essay itself. To make a good piece of academic writing, paragraphs, which will be conjoined by the writer to become a complete essay, needs to have certain helpful writing pointers. These pointers are, for paragraphs, to have a topic sentence with a clear controlling idea, with supporting sentences and a concluding sentence. In a complete essay, the pointers are that there has to be an introductory paragraph with a clear thesis statement, a number of body paragraphs with good organization and a concluding paragraph. Grammar/Structure: Grammar/Structure entails that a piece of academic writing needs to be comprehensible, as well as structurally significant in terms of effective sentence using along with the absence of grammatical inaccuracy. With demonstration of basic grammar and sophistication of sentence structure with complex and compound sentences, it helps ensure writers the capability in conveying their academic ideas through the essay. 4. Word Choice/Word Form: A good academic writing would need to have an equally good word choices and forms. An academic essay more often than not must be able to persuade the readers to agree or at the very least, understand the points which the writer is attempting to convey. This could be achieved by demonstrating a refined word choices as well as having correct word forms. Using sophisticated choice of vocabulary items and being able to properly employ its idiomatic use, is an important part of academic writing. In Kerri Smith’s article “In Defense of the Five-Paragraph Essay,” She claims that the five-paragraph essay should stay taught in schools as a guideline for a well-structured essay. She explains the five-paragraph essay as an “introduce-develop-conclude structure” that even great expository writing follows this structure (Smith 16). She purposefully communicates to her audience this idea to show that this structure gives students the knowledge and capability to write a professional essay. The way it shaped what I was writing was that I would choose topics that I knew very well so that it made it easier for me to just write from things I new and in that way meet the requirements and so it never allowed me to take time and research or acquire new learning. I have written a five-paragraph essay for a class assignment particularly following the “Spart Write” formula. My experience with this was that I was just trying to meet certain criteria and that's all I really cared about. By having to write in such a structure manner it didn't allow me to learn new things. As I look back into my high school years, I thought I wrote papers well. But then coming into a college environment, my papers were mediocre. By overlooking at my past papers, I found that they were unorganized, sloppy and had bad use of diction. From now on, I will use the tools I learned in English 1100-40 as a foundation for the future papers I intend on writing in college. Following the criteria of organizing ideas so that they flow, impacting the reader with diction and also by being creative, will help become an ideal writer. Following the criteria of staying motivated in short and long term goals, taking responsibility for actions and finally the ability to study well will help me develop into a supreme student.
The strengths in my writing are my organizational skills, grammatical construct, and my work ethic. Organizing an essay is a very natural process for me. I always follow the basic guidelines for the structure of an essay, which state that one must have an introduction, thesis statement, body, conclusion, and a works cited when needed. Formatting the essays is an integral aspect of organizational skills. Each new paragraph is indented, the font is twelve-point Times New Roman, the sentences are double spaced, and the headers are correct.
It would be foolish to claim that I have never overanalysed and disregarded conveying ideas and theories properly, in the interest of impressing my reader. Nevertheless, this aspiration indicates there is more to academic writing than simply passing information.

The easiest part of this component was actually inserting it in my essay after I understood the purpose for it, because at the beginning I was confused on the whole thesis concept. The thesis was the most challenging because I kept asking myself "Can I really argue this for five to six pages?" and also "Is this even considered a thesis statement?" I noticed that I can speak and write more effectively when I'm thinking critically and intellectually. My sentence structure has always been strong and I feel it has grown because of the practice we have had in class with finding thesis statements in our readings. The first instrument used was quantitative, the instructor gave students a writing assignment, and when it was graded, it was clear that there was a problem with effective topic and thesis statements, as well as general organization of the paper. To be sure that this wasn’t an isolated problem, the second instrument was developed; a quantitative instrument that surveyed the teachers, asking for information on their students comprehensive writing skills.

Through the exploration of the “Subjects and Strategies” textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly.
