Introduction The United States has 435 congressional districts. Being the most populated state, California is divided into 53 congressional districts, which are represented by Members of Congress. Commonly referred to as either Congressmen or Congresswomen, the latter are elected to represent a specific congressional district. The representatives serve the people of a particular legislative district for two years. The main duties of a Member of Congress include introducing bills and resolutions to the House, offering amendments and serving on various committees on legislative matters. In general, they represent residents of the district in the House of Representatives. Member of Congress I am from the 12th Congressional District of California (CA-12), and my Member of Congress has been Nancy Pelosi since January 3, 2013. She is a strong supporter of the Democratic Party and is a minority leader in the House. She also served as a Congresswoman in the same district during the previous tenure. The district covers all parts of San Francisco. It is a small county, but is the most populated one in California. Nancy Pelosi also …show more content…
Therefore, culture and activism dominate the region. For instance, there are African-American, Hispanic, Asian and white communities in the district (Alibguy). It is very dynamic in terms of development, including tourism, demographic and political ventures. It has distinctive neighborhoods such as Richmond, Fillmore, Marina, Castro, Bayview Hunters Point, and Potrero Hill just to mention a few. The region is affiliated to the Democratic Party. Thus, anybody who is a follower of the Republicans is sure to lose in the current politics of the region. This congressional district overlaps with one county, which is San Francisco, and is connected with several ZIP codes. It has very many attraction sites and educational places, as well as abundant resources (“About San
In Barbara Berlund’s Making San Francisco American: Cultural Frontiers in the Urban West, Berlund explains how San Francisco grew from a young settlement which grew rapidly thanks to in part of the California Gold Rush which took place in 1949. Of course with the growing of this small settlement came it’s conflicts and how it rised to where it stands present day. A primary factor which helped San Francisco flourish a ton was the influence from those who had power and chose what would happen throughout the city, for example the Big 4. Those who were wealthy did not make this city what it is today without the help of people who made up the middle class as well. Every establishment within this city set the social order as to how the inhabitants of San Francisco would go about their life in society.
"Mission Hill is part of District B-2, the statistics are representative of that area, as well as others in the Fenway and parts of Roxbury. You can't use the data as strictly representative of Mission Hill, but it gives you a good reference," said Detective Barbara Bowie.
Under the Articles each state could send between 2 and 7 delegates to Congress. In the Constitution each state was allowed 2 members in the Senate and 1 representative per 30,000 people (this number has now increased greatly) in the House of Representatives. As I stated earlier each state wanted to be represented according to different factors. The states with bigger populations wanted representation to be based solely off of population. The states with smaller populations wanted there to be a fixed number of representatives per state, regardless of size or population.
...o keep their jobs, Congress members must please the majority of a state and in the nation. Citizens are the people who help campaign and vote to re-elect you or have someone take your job. Members when voting must remember that and consider voting in favor of what the majority in their state wants even if he or she disagrees. If they do not listen to state residents who are the voters, this can lead to someone sitting down in their former seat.
Article 1, Section 2, Clause 3 of the U.S. Constitution states that, “Representatives…shall be apportioned among several states...according to their respective Numbers.” Apportionment is the mathematical process of dividing and allocating the four hundred and thirty five seats in the House of Representatives among the fifty states based on the population figures collected by the Census Bureau. This process, according to the Constitution, must be conducted “within every subsequent Term of ten Years.” Each of the fifty states is guaranteed one representative. The number of House of Representatives from each state fluctuates every ten years due to population deviation.
In conclusion, Congressional representatives should be limited to serving two terms. Limiting the terms of career politicians will promote fresh ideas and reduce the possibility of decisions being made for self-interest. It is in our Country’s best interest that our legislator’s decisions are equitable and that compromises are not made to ensure their own or their parties stay in office.
In modern times Oakland is known as the main metropolitan city in the East Bay. The city possesses 3 professional sports teams, which have a population of just below 400,000. Oakland is also the 3rd largest metropolitan city in the Bay Area behind San Jose, and San Francisco.( Encyclopedia Britannica ) The city mayor is the ex Governor of California Jerry Brown. Located in Alameda County Oakland’s area consists of a total square mileage of 78.2 miles, of which 56.1 miles is land, and the latter consisting of water.( Encyclopedia Britannica ) Oakland also possesses the 3rd largest seaport on the west coast.
The single-member district election system is the most common and best-known electoral system currently in use in America. It is used to elect the U.S. House Representatives, as well as many state and local legislatures. Under single member district systems, an area is divided into a number of geographically defined voting districts, each represented by a single elected official. Voters can only vote for their district’s representative, with the individual receiving the most votes winning election. This method of electing representatives is better than any alternative solution in various ways. Four compelling reasons to support the single-member district election system include the fact that single-member districts give each voter a single, easily identifiable district member; the way single-member district voting helps protect against overreaching party influence; that single-member districts ensure geographic representation; and finally, that single-member districts are the best way to maximize representatives’ accountability.
Under Article 1 Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution “ All legislative powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and House of Representatives” .The Legislative Branch is made up of two houses of Congress that try to represent the States’ views as equally as possible. Congress is broken up into two chambers, the House of Representatives and the Senate. Under Article 1 Section 3 “The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each state” that are elected by the people of which the state they represent. The House of Representatives are under Article 1 Section 2 “The House of Representatives shall be composed of members chosen every second year by the people
This housing affordability crisis is stripping away it’s diversity at increasing rates and I feel that not enough is being done to restore it. Liz Pfeffer article “Is the Bay Area in a Housing Bubble or a Crisis?” describes the situation as, “San Francisco’s chronic problem is a lack of housing for middle and lower-income people. It’s not that they can’t afford it, it’s that it doesn’t exist”. Officials should collaborate on creating solutions to the root causes and offer alternatives that would release some of the pressure. I would suggest promoting micro-homes or smaller scaled homes, limiting foreign investors’s purchases of single-family homes, or expanding campuses of employers to areas that are not heavily populated. It is not too late to restore the balance but it will take collaboration and team work. I am urging these officials and activists to try and save the beloved culture of this area and help retain it as a place where social justice is recognized and
It is seen from the moment you get here, to the moment you leave, and I believe that that is the reason why California is so memorable. The diversity that is seen is in our history as well, which can allow outsiders to understand where we our diversity rooted from. In the lecture named “Space, Identity, and Public Power in Nineteenth-Century Los Angeles”, Dr. Daniel Torred- Rouff defined race as a “system of power”, which can mean that race is man-made divider of people, and it has affected each and every state, but California has been moving in a progressive way to end or lower the risk of any racial altercations. The largest groups of race have some sort of history here, from Latinos to Asian, and these races have helped built California from the ground up, which can be seen in the rail roads and the agriculture. This cultural diversity has built and sustained this state afloat, and that diversity will continue to grow, because of the progressive mind set of
The 538 members are based off the current representation of the Senate and House of Representatives: 100 Senators, 435 House representatives, and 3 representatives for the District of Columbia (“What is the Electoral College?”, n.d.). A state’s representation is not how it would be expected though, as each state starts with three representatives, and then gains more proportional to its population. However, to make candidates pay more attention to smaller states, they are given more electoral votes, which are taken from larger
For example, Alaska only has 1 representative, California has the most in the USA. Members are elected by the people for 2-year terms, all terms running for the same period of time.. Both the Senators and the Representatives must be residents of the State from which they are chosen. In addition, a Senator must be at. least 30 years of age and must have been a citizen of the United States.

The two neighborhoods that I chose to use for this assignment are vastly different. The main reason is because they are on opposite sides of the country. The first neighborhood that I visited is the one that I grew up in. This neighborhood is in Connecticut, on the East Coast, all the way across the country from the neighborhood that I currently live in here in West Hollywood. Most of my family lives in Connecticut and Massachusetts and I’m the only one who lives on the West Coast. A big difference is that the neighborhood in Connecticut has houses that are more spaced out, have larger lawns, and very many more trees. There are very few apartments there, unlike where I live now where my entire street is almost all apartment buildings.
