The Effects of Concussions How do concussions affect athletes and people who have been in accidents immediately after the incident? Concussions can last days, week or even months, depending on how severe they really are. The effects of concussions can vary from headaches, memory loss, and other severe problems, and although concussions are the least traumatic brain injury, the physical effects can be serious. The most noticeable effect of a concussion are the symptoms that occur. The early signs of concussions can happen right after the incident occurs but can also not show up for a few days (Mayo Clinic). The different signs of having a concussion can vary, depending on how severe it really is. A concussion is a brain injury that affects the function of the brain and it happens when a person's brain rapidly moves back and forth, it causes physical and chemical changes in the brain (Mayo Clinic). Headaches are the most common sign of a concussion right when the incident happens but there are many more signs. Neurological exams are used at the doctor's office after an individual has been diagnosed with a concussion (Medlineplus). A Neurological exam checks coordination, vision and balance (Medlineplus). When small children get concussions their signs can be a little different because they can’t describe how they are feeling. Some signs they will show are excessive crying, lack of interest in toys and loss of balance (Mayo Clinic). About 20% of people will suffer from something called post-concussion syndrome(WebMD). Post-concussion syndrome is when an individual still has symptoms after 6 weeks of getting the concussion (WebMD). Women and older individuals are most likely to have post-concussion syndrome
