Each day, poverty takes the lives of twenty-two thousand children around the world.
Children who live in poverty not only lack money, but also common necessities. They live with constant hunger, dehydration and disease. Moreover, they lack opportunity, education, and hope. Even in this advanced, modern age, children on every continent are affected by the harrowing effects of poverty. Thankfully, Compassion International was founded to release children from the chains of poverty.
A particularly dreadful repercussion of child poverty is hunger. Around the world, 795 million people do not have enough to eat. (Shuh) Hunger can be caused by many factors, one of which is poor infrastructure (What is Hunger?). Even though many poor countries may …show more content…

HIV is a virus that slowly invades the immune system. The virus attacks special cells that help the body fight off disease, making the person more vulnerable to diseases and infection (What is HIV/AIDS?). If HIV is left untreated, the person will then move to the advanced stage, AIDS. AIDS is the condition where the human body has a deficiency in helper cells (What is AIDS?). This results in the body no longer being able to fight off certain diseases and infections. Those with AIDS, have an estimated 1-3 years to live, depending on the advancement (What is HIV/AIDS?). HIV is transmitted through sexual contact, and blood (What is HIV/AIDS?). Continually, one cannot know that they have HIV, without being tested (What is HIV/AIDS?). There is no cure for HIV/AIDS, but there are treatments for symptoms (What is AIDS?). In poor countries, HIV/AIDS is rampant and extremely difficult to control. In 1952, Compassion International was founded to release “children from poverty in Jesus’ name” (Mission Statement). It first started when Reverend Everett Swanson traveled to South Korea and saw impoverished orphan children. Moved by what he saw, Reverend Everett Swanson founded Compassion International (The Heart of Compassion Beats Stronger Than Ever). This Christian organization has been working for 64 years release children “...from their spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty…” (Mission Statement).
The thrust of Compassion International’s work is through child sponsorship. “Through monthly financial support, prayer and letter writing, sponsors invest directly in the lives of children living in extreme poverty” (Mission Statement). Children in the Compassion International programs receive help such as healthcare, food, protection and education (Child Sponsorship). The children also are able to join programs through local churches to hear the Gospel (Child Sponsorship). Compassion International gives hope to children around the world not possible elsewhere.
