For this assignment I am choosing these two paintings: Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh and the Last Supper by Leonardo Da Vinci. These two painting use two different types of paint. Starry Night uses oil painting and the Last Supper uses fresco, each type of paint has a different use and has a different type of look.

Fresco is a type of wall painting like the Last Supper is, there are two types of frescos. There is buon fresco, this type of fresco is done while the plaster of the wall is still drying this way the plaster absorbs the pigments of the paint. But the artist must paint quickly because of the drying wall. The second type of fresco is fresco secco or dry fresco and this is what type of fresco the Last Supper is. This type of fresco is done after the wall has dried allowing the artist to take as long as they need. But the wall being dry and not allowing the paint pigments to absorb into the wall causes the painting to flake over time. This painting has a great meaning behind it. This type of painting uses linseed oil as a binder in the paint. Oil paint is very slow at drying which allows the artist to come back the next day to make corrections to the painting without putting fresh paint on the canvas. Giving the artist more control over these types of paintings than others. Most of the artists that use oil paints use thin layers of what is called glaze to build up the color on the painting. Oil paintings also make it easier to add texture to the art work as well. In the Starry Night, Vincent Van Gogh uses oil paints to create this master piece. He also uses abstract which is where realistic things look unrealistic giving them different forms as well as colors. This painting was completed in 1889.
