Eurydice and August: Osage County Over the course of this semester we have read many wonderful plays. Two of the plays that I have enjoyed reading are Sarah Ruhl’s Eurydice and Tracy Letts August: Osage County. One on the major themes I have found in both Eurydice and August: Osage County is the relationships created between parents and children. In Eurydice, Eurydice has a very childlike relationship with her father, and in August: Osage County Violet has three different relationships with her daughters, Barbara, Ivy, and Karen. These two plays show very different portrayals of how parents react and interact with their children. In this paper I will focus on the types of parenting relationships shown in the two plays. Just incase you have forgotten, because these plays may not be the freshest in our minds right now I will give a brief explanation of the two shows. Eurydice is a retelling of the Greek myth about Orpheus. But in Sarah Ruhl’s version the story is told through the eyes of Eurydice.
Eurydice dies on her wedding day and is sent to the underworld where she reconnects with her father. Unfortunately, she doesn’t remember much from her life and about her husband Orpheus. She gives her a dress that while beautiful, is clearly not Ivy’s style and instead of picking something she thinks her daughter might actually like, she takes something and tells her daughter that she has no style and that what she wore to her father’s funeral is not acceptable for a woman to wear. This comment not only attacks Ivy’s style but makes her feel worst about losing her father. And when Ivy tries to brush it off saying her mother is weird and that it’s a black suit, she pokes fun at her daughter telling her she looks like a magician’s
