Compare/Contrast Essay Poems are used to encourage, inspire, and teach. Despite time or context, some poems have the same basic messages. “Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night” by Dylan Thomas, as well as “The Will to Survive” by Ross Rosenberg both have the same, overlapping message. The poetic devices used throughout each poem also have some features that may be similar as well. Both poems use a theme of determination to convey a message of not giving up. One device that both of these poems use is a shift in the poem. In “Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night”, a shift is used between “Rage, rage against the dying of the light.” and “And you, my father, there on sad height.”(lines 15-16). In “Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night”, imagery is used in lines 13-14 when it says “Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay”. This shows that these men, even though they are dying, are willing to fight for life or die in a big way. This relates to the theme due to the fact that these men have an obstacle in their way (their loss of sight), yet continue to not give up, even though their chance of death is certain. Thomas uses imagery to create a negative outlook on death by showing the determination of the men’s will to live on. In “The Will to Survive”, Rosenberg uses imagery in lines 7-11 when it states, “The rain, heat and snow of seasons yonder grate at its surface with diamond sharp teeth.” This shows the conditions in which the tree in the poem had to endure to survive. Rosenberg used imagery to relate to the theme of determination by showing in detail the challenges that the tree survived. Instead of succumbing to the weather, the tree stood tall and continued to grow, not becoming the weather that had tried to destroy it.
