Comparing the Films The Dead Poets Society and The Breakfast Club
There are numerous differences between the two movies, and although they’re both in a different setting and different time frames, there are also many similarities. “The Dead Poets Society” is set in the mid 60’s in an upper class prep school. On the other hand “ The Breakfast Club” is set in the 80’s at a typical public High School in a middle-class suburban neighborhood. Although one movie has a timeline of a whole school year, and the other only goes through one day, they both show very clearly how the average student life is and was in their respectable time frames. It is easy to compare and contrast everything from settings and timeframes, to obedience, to discipline, and also even stress given by parents. I believe I could only compare these two movies if they were realistic, and I believe that they were for the most part.
It is very clear in these two movies how obedience, and disciplinary action has changed over the years. In “ The Dead Poets Society,” the kids got in trouble for such things as staying up past curfew or not turning the lights off when they were supposed to. Of course this is how some schools still work but it’s definitely no longer the social norm. When’s the last time you heard about someone getting spanked with a paddle in school? The Breakfast Club, showed viewers how people from all economic backgrounds have something in common. From the very beginning of the film, as each student is dropped of for detention, the assumption about what these kid’s home life is like, what type of child they are and what social class they come from is established. When the kids are sitting in the library, where they sit even screams social standing. Claire and Andy sit next to each other because, from what we can tell, they are in the same standing. The hierarchy is started right from the beginning. The other kids all choose seats behind them. This shows that the popular, upper class, come first, everyone else is under them.

Throughout the movie many themes present themselves such as teenage rebellion, peer pressure and family issues as the students get to know each other. The most prominent theme throughout the movie is the student’s placement in the social structure of the school. From the very different reasons why they are in detention to the way that they are all treated differently by the principle, their social placement is evident.
The movie The Breakfast Club is a perfect example of peer relationships in the adolescent society. It shows the viewer some of the main stereotypes of students in high school you have a jock, a nerd, the weirdo, a rebel, and a prep. The Breakfast Club is a coming-of-age movie. This movie follows five high school students who all have school detention on a Saturday morning. They all come from various types of group. There is the anxious and bizarre girl, Allison; the sporty guy, Andrew; the hard-acting guy, John; the popular girl, Claire; and the nerd, Brian. They all saw each other that way too because they were “brainwashed” into accepting that. Since they are all from different types of groups, they don’t know each other, nor do they want to. At first they think they don’t have anything in common, but as time passes, that proves to be wrong. Since they were the only people in the library, they can’t help but slowly get to know each other. This movie was written and directed by the brilliant John Hughes, who in my opinion is the “King of 80’s movies.” He has directed great 80’s teen movies like 16 Candles, Ferris Beuller’s Day Off, and Pretty in Pink. This movie has mix of genres any individual could possible enjoy: drama, comedy, and even romance. The actors in the movie performed to be tremendous in their roles. The actors in the movie are known as “the brat pack”. The movie is starring: Emilio Estevez, known for popular movies like The Outsiders; Molly Ringwald, who starred in movies like Pretty in Pink and 16 Candles; Anthony Michael Hall, who was in the movie 16 Candles with Molly Ringwald; and Ally Sheedy and Judd Nelson, they both starred in St. Elmo’s Fire. There couldn’t be anyone better to portray the characters in the movie than these actors.
Many things cannot be truly predicted, and the continuation or end of human lives are one of those things. In both Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Mark Forster’s movie, Stranger than Fiction, both protagonists face death, not knowing it until it looms directly over them, but are saved by someone who they likely never expected: Boo Radley who stabbed Bob Ewell, and a wristwatch that mitigated Harold’s bleeding. Our protectors may not be someone or something we expect. Nor are they always the ones we have shown much kindness or care for, but they regardless care for us.

Almost everyone in America today has seen one of John Hughes’ iconic 1980’s teen movies. From Pretty in Pink, to Ferris Buellers Day Off, these iconic 80’s hits are still viewed as pop culture even two decades after their release. None of John Hughes movies has had as great an impact on society in America as The Breakfast Club. The 1980’s in America were filled with nuclear threats from the Cold War, President Reagan’s war on drugs and an increasing gap in wealth distribution. Even with America experiencing these heightened tensions, American teenagers were able to be more carefree, in a large part due to the draft being over, and worry about “teenage” problems. The Breakfast Club was able to capture this newfound freedom among teenagers as well as the feelings of anxiety, fear, and drama that came with high school. The film showed that one’s parents don’t determine your life, that breaking out of a label is possible, and that the emotions and issues that take place during this period of life aren’t any less important than the ones you face later on. The Breakfast Club by John Hughes was so impactful on 1980’s American culture because it gave hope for social class mobility, fought against the conservative politics of the era, and was one of the first movies to be shot from an accurate teenage perspective.
On my first day at Dunn Middle School, I learned that I had the gifted and talented classes, and assumed that discipline would be no problem for me. There was minimal chatter and the students seemed eager to learn. When I walked in on the second day, my co-op handed me a sheet of paper with the suspensions listed. This floored me, the infractions included fighting and sexual harassment. Over the next few weeks I saw that both out of school and in school suspensions were given a lot.
One thing is that they take care of use and show us right from wrong and show use unconditional love and care another is they help us with things we can’t do like change a tire on a car or help with homework and make you food and make sure you have clean close.
