Comparing Welsh Landscape, Small Window and Reservoirs
In this essay I am going to discuss, compare and contrast the three
poems written by R.S Thomas. The three poems arse based on Wales and
Welshness. R.S Thomas' views are very clear in these poems.
R.S Thomas was brought was brought up in Cardiff in a non-Welsh
speaking community. R.S Thomas did not learn how to speak Welsh until
he moved to Welsh speaking communities. When R.S Thomas wrote these
poems he felt as if he couldn't express himself as good as he could in
the English language, So he decided not to write his poems in welsh
and wrote them through the English language.
The first poem I am going to discuss is "The Small Window".This poem
was written by R.S Thomas as a reaction to the phenomenon in the 20th
century.The phenomenon first accured in small villages in Penrhyn-Llyn
when people from England came to Penrhyn-Llyn and offerd the welsh so
much money they would not refuse to move out of their homes and turn
them into holiday homes.Welsh people felt bitter over the
situation.The welsh people decided it was wrong what the English had
done too such small villages of Penrhyn-Llyn and the only way the
Welsh could express their feelings was to burn down all the holiday
homes.
At the beginning of this poem we were unaware of what the poem is
about and what Thomas is trying to say, But after knowing the
background of the poem Thomas' views become clear that he his talking
about the arson attacks that had gone on in the villages.
The poem opens with a delightful sentence which brings imagery too
your mind as you read the first stanza.

... Iwan goes on talking about how he thinks the Welsh is not
looking ahead on life and always looking back on the bad things that
have hapend. Also R.S Thomas says this in "Welsh Landscape" that there
is no present in Wales and there never will be until the people of
Wales begin to speak up for themselves and show they can improve the
country.
The way R.S Thomas expresses his feelings about Wales and Welshness in
these three poems are very similar. He expresses his feelings by going
through unforunate events that have gone on in his country. He gives
me the impression he has no pity for the people of Wales and he had
enough of the people not helping and speaking up to save their own
country. All three poems are very very similar and speak about Wales
and the negative points he have noticed about the people and country.
On Monday 5th of July we went and conducted a survey of the river Alyn
While doing so, he went through several events in his life to make him the person he was. In his poem “Ask Me” it can be understood as a reflection of his course; how it was like a river during these times. The nature of life also plays an important role in the poem as well. He does not have any regrets with the decisions in his life.
"Drunk with melody, and what the words were, he cared not." This was a very common view among early commentators about Dylan Thomas (Cox 1). Thomas was a poet who was either loved or hated. It depended on the individual, and how they viewed his poetry. He was very famous for his poetry because it contained visions of life, aspects of birth and death, fear, grief, joy, and beauty. At a younger age, Thomas was a very violent poet. As he grew older, he spoke for all men greatly when he wrote. He wrote his poems referring to the qualities and sensations of life. The strength of feelings, which were expressed in his writings, gave many different impressions about Thomas’ attitudes toward religion and spirituality, relationships, and the passion in his poetry.
Williams uses a lot of punctuation in his poetry. His sentences, although full of commas and semicolons, flow smoothly from line to line. He uses a lot of clauses and qualifications in his writing. Each stanza remains fresh, never becoming mundane or repetitive. He chooses words carefully, painting pictures with broad, smooth strokes rather than wispy phrases that are hard to follow.

For Gerald of Wales, religion was one of the most essential aspects of being a civilized human being. Therefore, when he wrote, The History and Topography of Ireland, he portrayed its inhabitants as subhuman and barbaric during his apparent travels to Ireland. As a colonizer, Gerald picked a far away place in which many had not been to, in order to establish them as the “other”. Unfortunately, for Gerald, he may have ridiculed the Irish for their lifestyle conveyed in his writing, but his exploitation of them most likely was done because he could in fact relate to them. In the book, The Postcolonial Middle Ages, Jeffery Jerome Cohen’s analysis in his chapter, “Hybrids, Monsters, Borderlands: The Bodies of Gerald of Wales”, closely focuses on Gerald’s cultural hybridity, which mirrors his accounts of the Irish. Although he deemed the Irish as barbaric, they were also hybrids, thus he also shared a feeling of displacement with them. Nonetheless, he still held himself to a higher degree because they did not properly celebrate Christianity, ultimately leading them to make other unpleasant decisions.
Whitman opted to publish his own passionate evaluation of Leaves of Grass. Whitman’s style of writing was quite unnerving to readers and critics. His poems received minimal public acclaim owing to a number of reasons: this openness in regard to sex, his self-portrayal as a rough working man and his outstanding innovations. He appeared to be a poet who didn’t adhere to the normal meter and rhyme schemes as set by his contemporaries.
Emotions are evoked with the aim to free persons from disturbing emotions. In instances of pity and fear persons tend to accumulate these feelings, which is harmful to the soul. In tragedy, however, whatever sufferings witnessed are not in our control and these emotions are easily released thereby relieve the excess in our souls. Tragedy transforms these distressing emotions into “calm of mind”, thus, the emotional appeal of poetry leads to pleasure. In addition, esthetic emotion in poetry translates to pleasure. The reader and the listener of the poem are prompted through figurative language to visualize what is in the real world. The vividness of the imaginary world that is experienced by the reader, poet and listener generates to a new spiritual knowledge or understanding which gives pleasure (Berlant, p.189). To add on, melancholy as an aesthetic emotion is a source of pleasure. Melancholy involves a variety of emotions; a yearning, sadness, feeling uplifted and even an elusive excitement. It has both pleasure and displeasure aspects. The displeasure aspect lies in the feeling of grief, fear of the unknown, loneliness and emptiness. The pleasurable aspect is entirely about reflecting on elaborate illusion and happy memories. Melancholy is therefore deliberately pursued by finding seclusion.
