About 1 in 5 Americans suffer from mental illness and if these problems aren't treated properly it can lead to more issues and bad situations. In the three short stories, The Yellow Wallpaper written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Strawberry Spring and Tell Tale Heart written by Stephen King, the narrators all show signs of mental illness and due to this all three narrators are unreliable.
The narrator of “The Yellow Wallpaper” is a mentally ill woman living in a prison cell of a room. The mental illness, poor living conditions and abundance of boredom all contribute to her unreliability. During the story the woman describes her emotions towards her husband and caretaker John, “I get unreasonably angry with John sometimes. I’m sure I never used to be so sensitive. I think it’s due to this nervous condition” (Gilman 2). The fact that she gets so easily angry shows she's unreliable because when most people get angry they say things they don’t mean and exaggerate. So she could have been upset when retelling her day and changed details or exaggerated. We also do not know the state of her condition; she could be having hallucinations or have psychosis. At the beginning of the story, he tells the reader his reasoning and justifications for committing his heinous acts. “I loved the old man. He had never wronged me” (Poe 1). While he claims to feel warmly toward his ward it turns out that he kills him in cold blooded murder. It is impossible to believe that he is truly capable of love. When talking about his disease the narrator states, “The disease had sharpened my senses--not destroyed-- no dulled them” (Poe 1). No matter the disease, it’s highly unlikely that is heightened the narrator's senses.The fact that they think it does shows their perception on reality is altered and the narrator is insane.
