How would the stories “The Sea Devil” and “The Tiger’s Heart” thrive without the elements of nature and power? The answer is: they wouldn’t. Nature and power support the stories in many different ways. They are the glue that holds both plots together. They bring the story to life. They are assuredly easy to find in both of the stories. “The Sea Devil” would not be what it is without nature and power. It’s not hard to find clear examples that show how nature and power are pretty much everywhere in the story. The mood of the story is very dramatic. The main conflict of the story involves nature! When the porpoise attacks the ray, they describe it like, “The blow descended on the ray’s flat body with a sound like a pistol shot.” (Gordon page 5) In that part of the story, there are signs of nature everywhere. Nature is not the only topic, though. The other main topic is power. In a way, this story is ironic for how the power is balanced between nature and man. The biggest obstacle caused by nature is the tiger. This story has more of a forthright mood. If it weren’t for Pepe, who would’ve fought the tiger? In paragraph 23, Juan Aria says, “To attack a devil, or a tiger, with nothing but a machete would be madness.” This is where power comes into play. Pepe is the only person in the village with a rifle. As a result, people look up to him and ask him for help in times of crisis. When Pepe goes to kill the tiger, he fights the tiger, but his gun fails him. He ends up killing the tiger with the machete. He then shoots it because, “Everybody had a machete. In his village, the man who owned a rifle must remain supreme.” (paragraph 70) That is clear evidence of power. Nature and power have a big influence in both
