The SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and the Alley Cat & Angles are both non-profit organizations that are all volunteers working together to rescue strays, abandoned and abused animals. The Alley Cat & Angel directly deal with cats; while the SPCA mostly work with dogs, but they do work with other house held animals. Once the animals are taken care of in a foster home environment and have met the conditions they need, including health and nurturing, they are ready to find a safe, loving, and permanent home. Both organizations have their own website that has a description of the animal, including what they like, how they do with kids and if they are housetrained. However, they both have a different way of showing off the pets on the website.
Both the SPCA and the Alley Cat & Angel have a profile for each of their pets that they have in their faculty, which differs in style. The profiles on the Alley Cat & Angel website are in 3rd person. However, both the SPCA and Alley Cat & Angel have a solution for the ones who are unsure about adopting a pet, offering a visit to meet the pet of their choice. Children and other household pets can visit the pet in the faculty to see how they get along. For people that do not know what kind of dog, cat or small critter they want, the SPCA offers a survey for what kind of pet would fit the lifestyle of the person or people adopting. Another reason for adopting not buying is that you can benefit from long-term advice and support. When you buy an animal form a breeder or a pet store, most of the time the advice ends when you walk out the door. Nevertheless, if you adopt or rescue an animal from a shelter, there will be a lifetime of advice, support and guidance on how to bring up and care for your pet. You can go back to them anytime and ask for any help, and they are willing to provide any assistance.
Call to Action: Challenge your audience to be a responsible pet consumer and not purchase dogs from pet stores or from the Internet. I encourage you to instead, adopt from their local animal shelter. At an animal shelter, you can find many amazing, healthy animals. If you do buy from a breeder, use extreme caution and ask to see the puppy’s parents. Also, please contact your congressional representative and encourage him or her to help pass the PUPS bill.
Making the right to choice to adopt befits you, your pet, and all the other stray animals that do not yet have homes. By, adopting through the human center you can save money while still obtaining a new pet. Not only will you be helping the lives of other stray animals but you would not be contributing to the inhuman puppy mill industry. In 2010 the ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) came out with a commercial that would shock the advertisement industry. The effectiveness of this commercial is proven, simply by watching the reactions of the commercial’s viewers. For those who have never seen the video it has a very sad and morose tone to it. The commercial begins with showing pictures and videos of suffering animals with the song “Angel” playing in the background. While this is going on the narrator of the commercial (Sarah McLachlen) is softly talking about the suffering and abuse that these unfortunate animals go through. Through many different rhetorical techniques the viewers are many times brought to tears after watching this commercial. When thinking of pieces of Rhetoric that demonstrates the use of pathos, the first thing I think of is this commercial. The sole purpose of this commercial is to emotionally compromise the audience until eventually the viewers will donate money to the cause. This video is so affective at completing this goal because of the way it connects to the viewers, and the way it uses many different methods to attack the viewer’s emotions.
Service dogs are another form of Animal Assisted Therapy. For example, a person that is deaf can own a hearing dog. “In these circumstances, a hearing dog can offer ameliorative benefits aside from alerting the caregiver to the phone ringing. A dog, being a full-time companion, ends up being a conversational partner that responds behaviorally to the statements and moods of other people nearby” (Fine 67). The dog becomes more than just a pet, but acts as a family member that takes full-time care of you.

From providing millions of animals with adequate shelter, and the proper care they deserve, the ASPCA is a charitable organization that positively impacts the nation. People can only imagine the horror of having to give up a pet for reasons beyond their control, they would be devastated for sure. More importantly, they would want to find a place that would provide their pet with a loving home, and people who would care for it as they have.
