This week’s module included reading selections from The Matrix, Plato’s The Allegory of a Cave, and Descartes Meditation I. While many philosophers have different perceptions on the concept of what is real and what is fantasy, the writers of these literary works depict the idea behind the body and mind problem as studied in module three. As seen in the reading, the mentality of each author is revealed by their philosophy of the mind and body concept. This also reveals each author’s perspective of truth and reality. Within the synopsis of The Matrix, Plato’s The Republic, and Descartes Meditation I, a similarity is portrayed throughout, as the concept behind the mind and body problem is referenced. In both works, each has been the object of manipulation from birth, perceiving the fantasy of their current lives as reality. In Plato’s work “Allegory of the Cave” the prisoners have been bound by chains, developing the sense that the shadows are actual, another misconception of reality. Likewise, The Matrix is bound by the dreamlike state simulated by computers. The differences found between the each of the works is the method by which the individuals find the truth. In the cave, freedom comes not by their own hand but by the hand who has been manipulating him. By being set free, the individual realizes the truth of the world surrounding him. In contrast, the main character of The Matrix, Neo, questions his reality before ever knowing of an alternate reality. Neo realizes the world as he knew it is generated by computers, leading individuals through life in a virtual setting, unaware of this deceit. As Neo is given the option to find the truth or remain as he is, he chooses truth. In this way, the character set himself free to discover the true reality of the
