Comparing The Family In Jeannette Walls The Glass Castle

No one ever said tolerating family members was easy. Tensions between others are bound to build and opinions about people are bound to change. The Walls family in Jeannette Walls’ The Glass Castle is a prime example of changing opinions about different family members. Most notably, Jeannette has a shifting attitude toward her father, Rex, because of one prominent thing: his alcoholism. Throughout Jeannette Walls’ memoir The Glass Castle, Walls’ attitude towards her father endures multiple shifts due their family’s changing conditions to convey the message of acceptance and forgiveness of past actions. As a child, Jeannette admires Rex’s traits. Jeannette appreciates his creativity. No matter how fictional they are, Rex’s stories always bring Jeannette delight. As Jeannette interviews an elderly woman, the woman asks about her parents. She asks about Rex’s profession and her parent’s location. Jeannette remembers: “[Jeannette said] ’He’s [Rex] developing a technology to burn low-grade bituminous coal more efficiently.’ ‘And they’re still in West Virginia?’ she asked…’They love it there,’ I said. ‘They have a great old house on a hill overlooking a beautiful river’” (271). Jeannette lies about her father’s profession and living conditions because she is ashamed of how he actually lives. Jeannette is able to show her shame through the dialogue with the prestigious woman. Jeannette recollects her parent’s unfortunate circumstances. Rex invites Jeannette over to talk with her and Jeannette recollects the scene upon her arrival. She recounts: “I climbed the dark staircase and pushed open the unlocked door. Mom and Dad were lying in their bed under a pile of thin blankets” (278). The diction employed creates a gloomy, substandard image of Jeannette’s parents’ home; it also creates Jeannette’s now solicitous feelings toward her
