In The Devil’s Arithmetic character relationships are a huge part of acknowledging how bad the Holocaust was. For example, Gitl and Chaya develop a very close relationship that helps us see how much of an effect it has on both characters. Gitl has to step up to be the shoulder to lean on for Chaya even though she needs one herself. When Chaya asks “Will everything be okay?” Gitl has to respond positively even when she isn’t sure of it herself. On page 43 in the Devil’s Arithmetic Gitl says, “These I was saving for my own wedding night,” Showing how much Gitl cared for Chaya by giving her those blu ribbons she was going to keep for herself. This small act of kindness shows us that Gitl really loves Chaya. But on page 107 shows that GItl has no fear to show tough love it says, “Do not *slap* touch her *slap*” This is when Tzipporah dies and she has a fly attached to her cheek and Chaya tries to shoo it away. But the reason the fly is on her cheek because she’s dead and flies are decomposers. Gitl didn’t want her to bother Tzipporah’s “deep sleep” so she stopped her with force. In the Boy Who Dared Helmuth and Gerhard have a very close relationship. Throughout the book Helmuth continuously longs to be with his brothers, but the age gap separates the boys. Here on page 18 his mom responds with this after being asked if Helmuth could follow Hans and Gerhard in an activity, “You’re too young.” Along with that on page 99 it says, “remembers only that he loves his brother.” This represents that Helmuth really loves Gerhard. The Devil’s Arithmetic and The Boy Who Dared techniques differ were the Devil’s Arithmetic focuses on poetic foreshadowing. Whereas The Boy Who Dared keyed in on the time of the events.
