In this paper, the stories The Cask of Amontillado and Free Fruit for Young Widows will be discussed in terms of theme, and characterization. The focus of the paper will be on the characterization of Etgar, Fortunato, and Montresor as well as the theme in Cask of Amontillado I also want to explore the symbolism in Emily Dickinson Success is counted sweetest and Robert Frost Fire and Ice. In the Cask of Amontillado the whole theme of the story is centered on revenge. The story starts off with Montresor upset about an insult given by Fortunato. We are never told what was said but whatever was said angered Montresor enough to set a plot to kill Fortunato. Fortunato’s character is described as being dressed as a fool. So couldn’t be possible that since it’s his job to entertain that made he didn’t mean to truly insult Montresor that he was just trying to entertain a crowd of people when he insulted Montresor. This whole story is centered on Etgar losing his childish innocents by learning to view people in different perspectives. Etgar tries to understand why his father treats professor Tendler with such respect especially since he beat up his father. He also doesn’t understand professor Tendler actions. It’s not until he’s thirteen years old does he learn the whole story. Professor Tendler was a Holocaust survivor found in a death camp by American soldiers. When he returned home he discovered his whole family was gone and a woman who was like a second mother to him living there with her family welcoming home. It wasn’t until later did he over hear them talk he learns that plan on killing him. He spent years fighting for his life only to come home to the same situation.
