Brendan Ellis Mrs. Foster English 112 Period 1 May 20, 2016 “The only help I could look to in the matter of replenishing my sapped vitality was my own?:” An Examination of Determination in King’s “Survivor Type” and Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” The short story “Survivor Type” by Stephen King and published in 1985 is told through the diary written by Richard Pine a former surgeon of Italian decent, who changed his last name from Pinzetti. Pine finds himself stuck on an island, having survived the sinking of the Callas on his trip back from Vietnam to America. Along with him is two kilos of pure heroin, worth around three hundred and fifty thousand dollars, which is his ticket back to becoming a surgeon. Writing in his diary for around …show more content…
Rainsford knowing his only survival was swimming to shore puts forth a tremendous amount of effort in achieving it. Both pine and Rainsford use their determination to accomplish daunting task which others likely would have gave up on. Once aboard the island Rainsford found a giant of a house owned by General Zaroff. Spending the night at Zaroffs, Rainsford enjoying a delicious meal along with pajamas of the softest silk for night. In the morning Rainsford learns Zaroff favorite kind of game, humans. Once Rainsford refuses to hunt alongside Zaroff, the General offers an alternative game: ’You’ll find this game worth playing,’ the general said enthusiastically. ‘Your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine. Outdoor chess! And the stake is not without value, eh?’ ‘And if I win--‘began Rainsford huskily. ‘I’ll cheerfully acknowledge myself defeat if I do not find you by midnight of the third day,’ Said General Zaroff. Given no other choice Pine made a tough decision. Low in mobility Pine could not find food easy causing him to go against the few morals the man has. Pine writes about the events of eating his own foot in his diary “Haven’t I told you I’d had nothing to eat for four days? And that the only help I could look to in the matter of replenishing my sapped vitality was my own?” (King 9). Rainsford and Pine determination is evident as they go against their own morals to benefit themselves and others. Rainsford kills Zaroff going against his moral of not killing men to insure no other man would have to play in the hunt. Pine on the other hand eats his own foot going against his morals on eating humans to survive while low on
Both “Full Circle” and “The Most Dangerous Game” have many differences with how the murder is presented in the story, but both also have many similarities. In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” the murder was done for fun and sport, General Zaroff killed his victims to fulfill a hunting sensation. But in the short story “Full Circle”, the murder was done out of jealousy, because the Terry was rejected. Throughout my paper I hope to show the similarities and differences of the murder cases within the two stories.
TMDG is a gothic tale of a famous hunter, who had an accident at sea, named Rainsford. He swims his way to the shores of an island that is populated by another hunter, by the name of Zaroff, and his henchmen, Ivan. Rainsford is greeted with five star hotel hospitality until Zaroff brags
Being hunted on an island is an experience like no other, whether it is a film or a short story. “The Most Dangerous Game” started off as a short-story, but was later turned into a film. Like many other films, the director has done some adjustments that differ from the short-story. The plot, setting, and characters were revised from the original form in the short-story. However, the difference in the characters was the most influential part that changed throughout the film.
In the story, A Long Walk to Waters, written by Linda Sue Park, the readers are introduced to many different individuals that were able to survive challenging environments. Those individuals used those factors, perseverance, cooperation, and independence. Those factors have allowed individuals to make it past through the harsh environments throughout their journey. Perseverance shows how those individuals kept on going without giving up. Meanwhile, cooperation represents how struggling individuals are able to work together in order to achieve their goal. Last but not least independence shows how individuals can conquer a hurdle by him or herself.
the story of his journey and struggle to overcome his addiction with the help of the native
In order to be the best, you have to beat the best. We saw and read two pieces describing this phrase. The Most Dangerous Game is about a hunter, Rainsford, who thinks that animals don't have any feelings expect the fear of death and pain. When going to the Amazon to hunt for tigers, he accidentally falls of the yacht and washes up on a peculiar and dark island called Ship-Trap Island. There is only one huge house or castle where there is one man living there. His name is Zaroff and is also a hunter. The only difference is that he hunts humans instead of animals. He invites Rainsford into his house and tells him about the stuff that he does. Zaroff wants to kill him in a game he has never lost...until now. The other piece was a movie called
Some people you meet can have a major impact on your life and change it for better or for worse. Rainsfords (a man who likes to hunt dangerous animals) life was greatly changed in both a good way and a bad way by a man who lives on a tiny island in a big house named General Zaroff. Rainsford ended up on this island after he fell of a yacht he was on to go hunt an animal somewhere else but ended up swimming his way up to the shore of an island. But after about a day of being on the island Rainsford was being hunted down. While Rainsford was trying his hardest to survive on the island he was on he found a way to escape to the mainland where General Zaroff was to try and get a way off the island back to civilization. The points in this story will be somehow related to my thesis statement in ¨The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, Zaroff teaches Rainsford how it feels to be like the hunted and not the hunter.
We are introduced to the protagonist and main character, Sanger Rainsford who is a big game hunter and a WW1 veteran. The story starts off with a conversation between Whitney and Rainsford discussing the island, so we can understand the reputation it holds.
Only to discover that the “chateau”, belonging to General Zaroff’s, symbolizes more than the feeling of relief; it is General Zaroff’s personal hunting lodge. In fact, venturing through the unknown while in the middle of the night can be unnerving and suspenseful to anyone who has been in that position. As the reader follows Rainsford through the daunting task of finding help after falling off the yacht, the mysteries of Ship Trap Island have the reader on the edge of their seat wondering what is going to happen next.
... out that nature, although it does impact the men's lives, does not have any connection to the outcome. With his short story, Crane challenges the idea that men and nature are connected spiritually. He even challenges the idea of religion by leaving the outcome of the men simply to the experience that they have. The boat, an oar, and some directions from their captain save the men from death, not a divine guide. One man simply does not make it to the shore alive. The view of man and nature within this story is somewhat pessimistic, pointing to the philosophy that we are hopeless in the face of circumstance. The point Crane makes in the end is that although people are often victims of circumstance, humans have one another to help survive difficult experiences.
In the article, “The Man in the Water” the author, Roger Rosenblatt, shows humans potential selflessness. After a plane crashes into the ocean, one man, the hero of the story, saves the lives of many before saving himself. As the rescuers were handing down the floaties to bring people to safety, every time one was given to this man he risked his life and handed it to someone else. Every time that he decides to save someone else he is one step closer to dying, and he knows that too, but instead he helps those in need around him. Although in the end he did not survive, what he did had effects on those watching. It showed people that any person could be a hero. The man in the water was a man with courage, and no fear, he sacrificed his life for the life of many who may not have survived if it wasn't for him or what he had done. While nature was against him and the people he fought against it to let those people live the rest of their life. In the article, the author, Roger Rosenblatt demonstrates the potential heroism and
"...Mr. Sanger Rainsford, the celebrated hunter..."(Connell 216) Rainsford is a hunter that is very controlled and opinionated. He is a good person but will do what is necessary. "This is my town. I've got friends here" (Foreman 296). When Kane says this, the first thought is that he is very protective and loyal. This is exactly what Kane is. He is a loyal sheriff to his town. He is also a very good person and will also do what is necessary. All though these people are put in very different situations and live very differently, they are very similar in their logically thinking and in their
After recently being separated from his hunting mates with miles of sea, hungry, tired, and in need of clothes, Rainsford is lost and alone. After finding some sort of civilization, Rainsford is overjoyed. After an unpleasant welcome, the ruler of the island comes out greets Rainsford, a known hunter. Seeing him wet, tattered, and hungry, General Zaroff offers to give him aid. "Come,’ he said, ‘we shouldn't be chatting here. We can talk later. Now you want clothes, food, rest. You shall have them. This is a most-restful spot.(Connell 5)" The General is not a straightforward person, giving a false impression to Rainsford, trying to get his trust. Connell uses characterization to support the theme that people just can’t be trusted off of first impressions. This is a perfect example characterization when Zaroff gives the impression that he is a charitable person giving a wandering stranger a place to rest. Later this is shown to be the opposite, that murders lurk the island. He plans to earn his trust for future interests. His plan for hunting. Zaroff is a perfect example of people might seem apathetic, but they can always have a dark
Throughout the story, Connell reveals Rainsford having the quality of perseverance. For instance, Rainsford falls off the yacht, into the ocean, he swims until he succeeds into making it to shore, despite the extreme tiredness he was
