In the thesis the two stories Of Mice and Men and The Joy Luck Club the stories are both positive and negative. The stories are both positive and negative because in Of Mice and Men the two main characters George and Lennie they form a stronger relationship. At the end of the story George has to make a hard decision by killing Lennie to make sure that Curly does not hurt Lennie because of him accidentally killing his wife. George knew if he were to just let Curly get Lennie he would torture him because of what he has done. Many characters have hopes and dreams which they wish to accomplish. Of Mice and Men has two main characters that go through obstacles to get what they want. In the beginning it is George and Lennie running away trying to get a job. Once both George and Lennie have a job they try to accomplish their dreams. Unfortunately they both can't get their dreams to come true since lennie does the worst and George has to shoot Lennie. Steinbeck uses characterization, foreshadowing, and symbol as rhetorical strategies to make George's actions justified.
In conclusion both short stories were great at allowing us the reader to see the way that women were repressed in their society in the 1900s. We don't hate the men; we just wish women did not have to be so subservient. Freedom is achieved in very unconventional ways in both of these stories, but the kind of freedom these narrators achieve is not available to most women of this time era.
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is a great example of 1900’s literature, and a great reflection of the great depression with a tragic end. A lot of themes were displayed in this short story, and developed the plot as the story moved on. Characters in the book are developed mainly through these themes.
