A Gathering of Old Men by Earnest J. Gaines is a great novel about race relations in the south. The novel begins with a child narrator who relates the report that there has been a shooting on a Louisiana plantation, and a white, Cajun farmer Beau Boutan, is dead. He has been killed in the yard of an old black worker, Mathu. Because of the traditional conflict between Cajuns and blacks in South Louisiana, the tension in the situation and the fear of the black people is immediately felt in the novel. I would definitely recommend this book to someone else.
Both of these authors’ short stories cover the changing south. Both of their short stories give us a profound impact on the thinking of these two men when it comes to their views of the south. Coming from different backgrounds this gives the reader a good view of what the overall picture of the south looked like at the time. Faulkner and Ellis disagreed about how differences were handled in the south and whether the changing south was good or bad, but they both of them agreed that the south changing was unavoidable.
The movie “Red Riding Hood” is a classical art work that had been introduced to the huge collection of children bedtime story for many centuries. The significance of the movie is transformed from the original story itself. Even though it is just a fairy tale, “Red Riding Hood” associates many interesting archetypes of character that are later on being used by many motion pictures and filmmaker. Even though the time periods are very different (by 200 years) the formulas for their fairy tales seems to remain constant. Character development, which is very important in fairy tales is both well done and accurately portrays the living situation for a character in the time period of when it was written. Perrault's version seems to put Cinderella's family in a higher, well-off situation of the Grimm's because she is still abided to obey the rules that her dying mother had set for her. Something that you would see a women do in the late 1600's. Her higher class and the rules of her generation has set her to not have revenge on her step-sisters and helps them marry in the end, making a happy ending to the story for everyone. This also gives off the rules of the time to the young girls who would be listening or reading this story back then. They knew their place in society and tales like Perrault's reinforced it. The Grimm's version, titled Ashenputtle, has key elements in the story line that make it very different from Perrault's Cinderella. The theme becomes very different as the end of the tale results in revenge on the step-sisters from Ashenputtle. This variation in the story line represents the setting in which the Grimm's either lived in themselves, or the living situation of the people who related this tale to the Grimm's.
At the start of each story the authors give you a bit of insight into Connie and Little Red Riding Hood’s lives. Connie is a fifteen year old girl with a whole lot of vanity. She lives with her family. Her father works out of town and does not seem to be involved in his daughters lives as much. Her older sister, who works at the school, is nothing but a plain Jane. Connie’s mother who did nothing nag at her, to Connie, her mother’s words were nothing but jealousy from the beauty she had once had. The only thing Connie seems to enjoy is going out with her best friend to the mall, at times even sneaking to a drive in restaurant across the road. Connie has to sides of herself, a version her family sees and a version everyone else sees. Gillis states, “Connie herself lives in two worlds, ever dressing appropriately”(67). In Little Red Riding Hood’s case she is described as the most beautiful girl imaginable who has a gift of charming the village people. To compare and contrast both the story telling of little red riding hood from watching Hoodwinked film an animation comedy written by Cory Edwards, and Todd Edwards based off the tale of the re- make of the little red riding hood. The stories ?Little Red Riding Hood,? by Charles Perrault, and ?Little Red Cap,? by the Brothers Grimm, are similar and different. Moreover, both stories differ from the American version. The stories have a similar moral at the end, each with a slight twist. This story, in each of its translations, is representative of a girl?s loss of innocence, her move from childhood or adolescence into adulthood. The way women are treated within each story is different. Little Red in the French version was eaten; whereas in the German version, she is rescued by the woodsman, and this further emphasizes the cultural differences.
The folk tale of “Little Red Riding Hood” has numerous variations and interpretations depending on what recorded version is being read or analyzed. “Little Red Cap,” by the Grimm Brothers, and “The Grandmother,” as collected by Achille Millien, are different in numerous ways: the depth of the narrative structure, characters involved, length – yet, the moral lesson is largely unchanged between the two versions. One of the more glaring differences between the two versions is the way that the narrator and the actions of the characters are used to describe the young girl, female, and the wolf, male. Being either female or male are matters of biological makeup. The characteristics of femininity and masculinity that are associated with being female or male, however, are socially and culturally defined. How do these different descriptions inform gender construction, and more specifically, how do gender constructions help to naturalize stereotypes within the collective conscience of society?
In conclusion, it is common that both Beauty and the Beast stories written in different countries have their similarities and differences since the authors imagined different ideas. It makes Beauty and the Beast an even more interesting story being that there are many versions of it around the world.
In the classical tale of Little Red Riding Hood, Little Red Riding Hood leaves her mother to visit her grandmother, and both the women possess the feminine roles in the society. The story commences in the kitchen with the mother baking. In many cultures, the communities assume that the women should cook, clean, and tend to impositions inside the household. As the grandmother appears in the plotline, the author illustrates her to be ailing and feeble. By describing this elderly female in the manner of weakness, the author subconsciously implies the faintness and vulnerability of women brought on by the ideas and practices of an earlier time period. The grandmother becomes vulnerable and naïve as she expresses her susceptibility to the wolf when she tells him she is “too weak to get out of bed” (Hyman 12). By admitting to her helplessness, she acknowledges the weakness of her gender to the more superior male wolf.
The first significant difference is in the plot of Roald Dahl’s poem. Taken out completely is the Wolf encounter with Little Red Riding Hood in the woods. Instead of the Wolf cunningly getting information on the whereabouts of grandmother’s house from Little Red Riding Hood, in Dahl’s poem the “Wolf began to feel / That he would like a decent meal, / He went and knocked on Grandma’s door” (Dahl Lines 1-3). The first couple of lines in Dahl’s poem don’t begin focusing on Little Red Riding Hood the way Perrault’s short story does, but instead these lines aim the attention of the poem on the Wolf by beginning with his primary actions and feelings. Along with this absence of plot and shift in focus, Roald Dahl deviates from Perrault’s short story again during Little Red Riding Hood’s encounter with the Wolf in grandmother’s house. Roald Dahl includes the beginning dialogue of questioning between Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf that was originally present in Perrault’s work. However, as this repetition of dialogue goes on, there are significant differences in Roald Dahl’s poem. Instead of carrying on the same questioning dialogue, Little Red Riding Hood says, “but Grandma, / what a lovely great big furry coat you have on” (Dahl Line 39), to then what Dahl answers, “That’s
