The book A Long Walk to Water caught me not wanting to stop, with great plotline and character development. Salva was a great character who had a very preserverant attitude. While running away from the refugee camp he was forced with a decision to just give up or to carry on. With his attitude he carried through to get through the desert. The best part of the book was when the two stories met together. It was the best because all of the plot and different changes made that last section happen. If it weren’t for Salva coming to America Nya would have never gotten their well. The worst part was, in my opinion, was the repetitiveness of Nya’s story. The author Linda Sue Park's book, A Long Walk to Water, tells a story of a boy named Salva who was a lost boy in the Second Sudanese civil war in 1980. Salva managed to survive the war along the way without his family and survived on his own following ways to go on in life no matter what bad situation he was in.
In the opening chapters, the story hadn’t picked up growth as much as I hoped. The main characters lived in a refugee camp and had considerably harsh living conditions. In my viewpoint, much of the beginning consisted of descriptions of the scenes and dialogue which were mostly irrelevant to the storyline, except for their origin story and the death of their mother. Though, when the journey from the camp to Kikima began, the story’s development accelerated, making me more engrossed in the book. Beyond that, I think Eric Walters did an excellent job not being repetitive with the description of the continual scene of the settings, the laborious walking and its toll on the two, since that would’ve driven my interest away.
I found the book to be easy, exciting reading because the story line was very realistic and easily relatable. This book flowed for me to a point when, at times, it was difficult to put down. In the book “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park, Salva goes through a lot of loss and gains hope and persistence, which he learns will be necessary to succeed. This included the loss of loved ones, harsh changes in the weather, and the doubt of his ability which this helped him move through his long journey. In Linda Sue Park’s book, Salva deals with these obstacles, and other plot events by using hope and persistence which illustrates the main idea of the book.
Nya’s story leaves us guessing how she persists in difficulty. The text doesn’t come out straight and say it. It’s like a new problem every chapter; it keeps us on our feet. While Salva’s story is like watching the same show over and over again.

The Lost Boys of Sudan was about 17,000 boys. Some of the boys died of starvation hunger, dehydration or by getting eaten by animals during the journey to a place of safety. Although this may seem like a made-up story. it wasn’t. It was all real to salva, a lost boy in Sudan who survived the journey. This young boy (Salva) endured long walks to camps across the country, becoming a leader and making a positive impact on water in sudan which was a consistent struggle in Sudan. This boy has been written about in a book called “A Long Walk To Water” By Linda Sue Park. Salva’s life wasn’t easy as we read in the book. Salva has lived and survived with these survival factors: Hope, Persistent and Bravery.
There is one book that can, and does affect everyone that reads is The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. John Steinbeck is a very interesting person, and one that did not even graduate from college. New York seems to be the city of new beginnings and for Steinbeck it was just what he needed. He got a big reality check when he tried to become a free lance writer and that did not work out the way he had hoped it would. He then went back to California and published both short stories and novels. Steinbeck got heavily critiqued on his first novels and considers his best work The Grapes of Wrath by far. Since this was such a successful novel and one that needed to be shared with more people they made a movie based on the book, but left out some key parts at the end of the novel. They left out these last chapters because of some key reasons and when you read the book you begin to understand why they could not have put these words into a picture. John Steinbeck creates a picture and feeling at the end of the novel that is almost unbearable to read and leaves you with a feeling of dread but, that is what The Grapes of Wrath is all about.
Sonia Sotomayor's My Beloved World was an interesting and a relatable book especially to read in my first semester in college. I learned so much from Sotomayor’s experience and what she went through to come to the conclusion that everything is going to be okay. And as long as I set a personal goal for myself and don’t give up, I can do it. She did such an amazing job in writing this novel that we could imagine what it was like to be in her shoes, every detail and mood she set with each chapter was as if we were going through what she was and being able to see the world from her mind. I think my favorite thing about this novel was the realistic ending. Some books try to just give you a fairy tale but this book had an ending that mad you think in the end if I was in the same position would I do the same thing. I didn’t like the fact that the novel portrayed mental illness in a way to say that it needed to be hidden and protected. I thought this novel was very believable for the time period that it was set in. I think the ending to this novel was perfect it was an accurate ending to this
There are many hardships of life. Salva Dut experienced many of those hardships of life during his journey, having to swim across the Gilo River with Crocodiles. Most people would not be able to tolerate what Salva experienced in Linda Sue Park’s, A Long Walk to Water. Salva lived in Sudan and there was a lot of fighting going on at that time. There are many ways to describe Salva and one fitting description was as a survivor. He is described as a survivor because he lived through gunfire, bombings, dangerous wildlife, and little to no basic needs. He also suffered the loss of his family, friends and other companions along the way.
One that stick out me the most was the support Enrique’s mother got from the family she worked for. The creation of the Novel was the most humanitarian thing someone could do. The author Sonia Nazario is most humanitarian writing Enrique’s Journey which recounts the unforgettable quest of a Honduran boy looking for his mother, eleven years after she is forced to leave her starving family to find work in the United States. I would easily give Prisoner B-3087 by Alan Gratz a solid A- because off all of its details and how deep it really goes into story and how he lived! I only wish it was a longer book that is the only downside.
The effects of violence against a culture are catastrophic, and come in all kinds of forms. In the book, “A Long Walk To The Water”, a war was an effect of violence. For example, Sudan’s own government used violence to force one religion upon its people. The war caused villages’ to be destroyed, schools bombed, and families separated. As well as hunger, loss of innocent life, and many other negative effects. Another form of violence against a culture, is the violence against woman. Today violence against woman has grown at an alarming rate. The effects have made woman think twice before going somewhere alone. Women have to be more alert and cautious now of days. Both forms of violence have terrible effects that negatively impact the cultures.
When we were assinged to do a book critique, I knew right away I was going to do a Nicholas Sparks novel. I have read all of his books, cried many tears and felt many emotions as I pictured the people falling in love, people doing heroic events and people living their normal life. I wasn’t sure which one I wanted to do, but I had to go with the book that affected me the most, The Notebook. The Notebook was the first novel written by Sparks and personally it is my favorite. He is a wonderful author who possesses the ability to have that deep heart felt emotion and love that many women search for in life. He wrote the book in such a way, that I as a female related to. I have felt the emotions Allie felt, I have been through the heart break, so relating and picturing events from The Notebook was never an issue for me, or maybe any other woman either.
