The American Dream has been a major foundation of American culture. The American Dream is considered to be the belief that everyone can obtain a better life and that their dreams and goals can be achieved, regardless of any circumstance or social class. It is a very common idea for everyone, but it is something that is viewed in various ways. In Willa Cather’s “My Antonia” and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “Winter Dreams,” both authors compare the idea of success based on wealth and social relations. Both authors show that in the end, not everyone gets the what they ask for, challenging the belief of success and happiness and the false expectations it can bring to those who believes in the values.

The idea of the American dream is to have both success and happiness. It is shown though both stories that it takes some sacrifices for one to achieve their goals nor happiness. For Dexter and Jim, they sacrifice their ideals and relations in order to achieve wealth, education, and a high status. For Antonia, she sacrificed wealth and most of her childhood going through many obstacles in order to have a better life as an immigrant. Unfortunately, it seems that none of these characters achieved their so called “American dream.” It makes us wonder what is success and happiness? Success is characterized as the goal and happiness is characterized as how we get there or the effects of that goal. We see that Dexter’s drive for financial success and a high social status ultimately makes him unhappy. Jim achieves an education and a career as a lawyer, but is still not happy while Antonia, who remains poor, finds happiness, despite not achieving material success. Antonia accepts poverty and having a large family with conviction. She finds happiness in her husband, her large family, and the farm life. However, Jim and Dexter, who you would think would be happy with their material success, are not. In the end, this shows the idea that some successes do not ultimately lead to
