Imagine if time was the single most important thing: greater than family, friends, or making memories. The reason one would survive, but never truly live, is all determined by the time of day. Between the three mediums that have been read and discussed in class; Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, Metamorphosis (the graphic novel) illustrated by Peter Kuper, and the painting ‘The Persistence of Memory’ by Salvador Dali all contain a common theme; time is all consuming.

In the original story Metamorphosis by Kafka uses the main character Gregor Samsa as a metaphorical representation of himself; as the purpose was likely to express the his own personal feelings of depression and isolation, as he was suffering from depression. Although Gregors biggest dilemma is not that he awoke a vermin, but that he is late for his train which will inadvertently cause him to be late for work. Gregors main concern that morning was “I’ve got to get up, my train leaves at five” (pg. 95). However, this medium is not the strongest example of the theme compared to the other works because of the ability to freely interpret its meaning. The first piece of evidence that supports this theme would be the obvious use of the melting clocks. Since this painting was inspired by Dali’s dream created in his subconscious and due to the clocks being disfigured, it could potentially symbolize that time is able to pass before one can comprehend that it is gone. Another example could be the horizon in the distance of the painting with the light over powering the dark sand. As a result could mean that as one takes the time to approach the light, it could mean things could be better in
