Most people who do not have many friends or bullied could be a little depressed. Isolation plays a huge role. Even though these people are surrounded by others, some may feel as if no one cares or struggle is a way of life. Being isolated may cause any person to be depressed. E.A. Robinson, Stevie Smith, and Nathaniel Hawthorn illustrates the effect of isolation on the characters in “Miniver Cheevy”, Richard Cory”, “Not Waving but Drowning”, and The Minister’s Black Veil”.

In the poem “Not Waving but Drowning” the character appears to be someone who has always been the life of the party, but deep down inside, he is drowning and dying slowly. The narrator states “But still he lay there moaning/ I was much further out than you thought/ And not waving but drowning” (Smith lines 2-4). The main character appears to be having fun but in reality, he is crying for help, and no one even notices. Just because people may seem happy, does not make them happy. The main character from “Richard Cory”, is the wealthiest man in town. He, too, went unnoticed, but was well recognized. The author lets us know that looks can be deceiving; “In fine, we thought he was everything/ To make us wish that we were in his place” (Robinson 11-12). The author goes on to write “And Richard Cory, one calm summer night/ Went home and put a bullet through his head” (Robinson 15-16). The townspeople thought he was so happy because he had money and was so graceful. He was actually depressed. Nothing triggered him to kill himself because it was on a calm summer night.
