The stories of “David and Goliath” and “The Basketball Underdog” are similar and different in many ways. These stories are both in the same book David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell. Gladwell’s book talks about underdogs, misfits, and the advantages of these people. Both of these stories have an overlying theme of the advantages of an underdog. The stories “David and Goliath” and “The Basketball Underdog” have many similarities and differences between the two of them.
“David and Goliath” is a biblical story of an underdog overcoming the odds and winning. A very long time ago, the Israelites and the Philistines had a battle with each other. Instead of having a big war—all of the Israelites against the Philistines— each of the sides picked their strongest, biggest, and best person to fight one-on-one against the other. Once the sides have picked their candidate, they would fight against each other to the death, to find out who truly is the best. The Philistines picked Goliath. Goliath was a tall, strong, and muscular giant who has spent all of his life fighting in battle. Goliath was very much expected to win. Once the Israelites heard about the Philistines picking Goliath, they were very worried. They had no idea who to pick, until a normal man named David stepped forward to volunteer to fight Goliath in the battle. David was weak, scrawny, and was not experienced in fighting. David and all of the Israelites knew that if David just tried to fight Goliath straight up, he would definitely lose. When it came time for battle, David pulled out a slingshot that he made and shot a rock in Goliath’s forehead before he could even approach David. For example, “David and Goliath” is a biblical story that changed the world and was very important, but “The Basketball Underdog” is just a fun and small ‘Cinderella story’ with not that much importance. These stories are very different in importance. Also, “David and Goliath” is a story that has only one battle. David made the slingshot once and shot Goliath, then it was over. But, “The Basketball Underdog” is a constant fight over and over all the way from their first practice, to the national championships.
All in all, “David and Goliath” and “The Basketball Underdog” have many things in common, and also many differences. These are both stories that are inspirational and entertaining, and I would recommend them to everyone.

In the poem, “Casey at the bat”, and the story “David and Goliath, a comparison of David and Casey shows differences and similarities. The first similarity I will be talking about is the fact that both their towns(or teams) are counting on them. In “Casey at the Bat” Casey’s home team is counting on him to get a home so they can win the game. These two stories, although written by two different authors present similarities in the characteristics of the main character. Sammy and Tommy are presented with adversity they had previously never faced. Sammy has to decide should he stand up for the girls by quitting and be the hero or should he mind his own business and keep his job. Sammy is forced to quickly make a decision which his boss Lengel feels he made to rashly. “’I don’t think you know what you’re saying,’ Lengel said” (Updike, pg. 146). For Sammy his decision is what he feels he needs to do and he never regrets his choice. Tommy is faced with adversity of a different kind, he has to decide should he believe the teacher and listen to what she is saying or should he, like the other children, think she is strange and a liar. When she loses her job Tommy is forced to make a decision, confront the child who got her fired, or stay quiet and let the matter slide as it is not his problem. Jack London’s “To Build a Fire” and John Updike’s “A&P” were very different, but interesting stories. Both authors chose a different approach to their chosen tone. Updike wrote in a more laid back and entertaining way, while London, on the other hand, chose to write in a more formal and serious way. The authors also developed much different characters. London’s main character was much older and rugged than the complicated teenage girls and grocery clerk that Updike chose to focus his story around. The most significant difference, however, is the choice of conflict. Updike’s conflict was a simple one focusing on man versus man, but London’s story had many conflicts that dealt with much more serious issues like, for example, life and death.

One may talk about an event that will break your heart, while another might bring a smile to your face. Centuries ago, two books were written with similar and different ideas. The Epic of Gilgamesh and The Book of Job have different settings although they both discuss friendship, death and mortality, pain and suffering, and characters, but individually the book of Job examines where human beings stand in the world.
Both narratives compare as timeless tales of reputable heroes. They both include similar plots of long journeys back home. The main characters’ flaws are arrogance which is the source of many of their troubles.
The Epic of Gilgamesh and The Odyssey both are held in high respect by literature analysts and historians alike for the characterization of the hero and his companion, the imagery brought to mind when one of them is read, and the impressive length in relation to the time period it was written in. The similarities that these two epics share do not end with only those three; in fact, the comparability of these works extend to even the information on the author and the archetypes used. However, The Odyssey and The Epic of Gilgamesh contrast from one another in their writing styles, character details, and main ideas. Both epics weave together a story of a lost man who must find his way, but the path of their stories contrast from one another.
In conclusion, these stories are very similar in many ways. Out of all the themes that could be used to compare the two, the most important ones are hatred, manipulation and hatred. Hatred is disliking some one or something and there are many characters that dislike each other. Manipulation is using your creativity to come up with a way to get someone to believe something that is not true. Lastly, jealousy, which is wanting something that someone else has and doing things to get it which is what Iago did in the play and Fernand did in the movie.
