Did you know that it took 14 years and over 600 workers to build the Brooklyn Bridge that connects New York and Brooklyn? In the text A Bridge for New York by Patricia Mayberry and The Brooklyn Bridge by The Sun, May 24, 1883, the authors present information very differently on the same topic of the Brooklyn Bridge. Although both of the texts speak of the Brooklyn Bridge, the same details are not there. For instance, only one of the texts states who built the bridge. There are many different but important details in each text that make the texts original pieces. Although there are many similarities between the two texts, there are many well-needed differences. When the author speaks about how the bridge was built and who built it, that author gives us background information. Background information is important when speaking about past events, such as how the Brooklyn Bridge was built. In the text The Brooklyn Bridge it speaks about how the bridge was built but not as in depth as the author of A Bridge for New York does. In the text The Brooklyn Bridge it says, “On the 3rd of January, 1870, the work of preparing for the foundation of the tower in Brooklyn began. The stone tablet close to the top of that mighty pile bears the date of 1875.” This excerpt of the text The Brooklyn Bridge proves that the author does speak about how the bridge was built but does not speak about who built it. Only the text The Brooklyn Bridge speaks about the aftermath of the bridge being built.
