People often believe a mother is the most influential person in a daughter’s life. In this novel however the audience are able to easily distinguish that Juliet’s mother figure role is played by the nurse rather than Lady Capulet. Within this essay I will examine the significance of act 1 scene 3 from the play. Also I will explore the ways in which the nurse’s character is displayed by analysing her personality traits language and her involvement within the play. Furthermore I will evaluate the two film versions of the play, 1968 version by Franco Zeffirelliand and 1996 version by Baz Luhrmann and how or if the nurse is contrasted throughout.
The audience is initially presented to the nurse in act1 scene 3 along with Juliet and Lady Capulet. Straightaway, we see that the nurse is obedient to Lady Capulet. She calls out to Juliet and brings her to her mother as soon as Lady Capulet wishes to speak to her daughter. ‘God forbid! Where’s this girl’. This proves that the nurse is a respectful servant who listens to Lady Capulets commands. In this scene, the audience are mainly focused on the nurse as she is the main
