The novel “1984” is a story about people striving for a utopian society. This fictional world depicts a hopeless and nightmarish state. The main character Winston is a meaningless member in the party, the party uses a totalitarian authority to enforce perfect conformity amongst its members. In 2017 there are many similarities and differences between the book and today’s society. George Orwell might have wrote “1984” in the 1940’s but, he may not have been far off from predicting the truth in 2017.

Many of “1984’s” government characteristics is very similar to the characteristics of today’s government. One way in which the government in “1984” is similar to our government in America in modern society is how surveillance is being taken of citizens. In the novel while Winston was being tortured by O’Brien, O’Brien was attempting to brainwash Winston into believing that 2+2=4, as well as 2+2=5. This happens regularly in modern society where we as people are told to believe one thing but are told to believe something contradicting. An example of this is that we are told to believe that in America everyone has equal rights, however people are given either more or less opportunities solely based on their race, gender, skin color, and sexual orientation. In the society of “1984” there existed an “Anti Sex League” organization to take all of enjoyment out of sex because it was deemed as unacceptable, alongside eating chocolate or drinking alcoholic beverages of high quality. This relates to how in modern society how people are expected to feel guilty about things that are normal for us to enjoy such as sex or drinking alcohol as an adult. We have “sin taxes” that people are forced to pay for purchasing alcohol, tobacco products, and pumping cars with
