News stories are covered several times and most of us do not even realize it. Although more recently many people get news in more similar mediums such as on the Internet because of the decline of newspapers. “Since 1940, the total number of daily newspapers has dropped more than 21 percent” (McIntosh and Pavlik, 119). Many times we do not realize the same story we read online was covered on our local news station and in our local newspaper, even further than that this same story is being covered in many different news stations, newspapers, and news sites all over the country and even the world. So what makes these stories different? Each time you read a news story from a different source something different happens to it. The different views and frames used by the source gives the reader a different take every time. I saw that first hand in my two stories. In my project I compared the same story of Mya Lyons, a nine year old girl who was stabbed to death.
The first place I found this story was on Fox news station which led me to look in my alternative new source, the Chicago Defender. The Chicago Defender is a Chicago newspaper that is a century old. The Defender is an African American newspaper. On May 5 1905, The Defender was founded in the kitchen of Robert Abbott. It originally was a four page editorial piece made by local items Abbott found around the area and only had a circulation of about 300 copies selling for twenty five cents each. As the years went on the Defender slowly grew into a major outlet for the feelings of the African American community, being know for its outspokenness through attacking white oppression and defending equality for African Americans. The Defender, in its prime, featured poets such as Gwendolyn Brooks and Langston Hughes along with pieces by many other writing legends. Since then the newspaper has evolved into a daily newspaper that as recently as 2009 was recognized as the most influential newspaper of its kind in the early and mid-20th century. Although in recent years the paper has declined. It was recently purchased by Real Time Inc. that intends to continue the original intent of the paper, to appeal and inform the African American community as well as help the paper expand in the future (Chicago Defender history dates back over a century).
For example, what happened in Baltimore led to social movements in New York and New Jersey and eventually a mass behavior or movement known as “Black Lives Matter”. With very rare exception, the stories on the news and on front pages of newspapers only show those acts of civil disobedience that escalate to violence. Rather than cover a peaceful protest, they would have a news story where police had to arrest protesters. People form opinions on events, cultures, politics and even other races based on what they see on the news. Two virtually identical situations can be understood in two completely different ways based on the way it is reported. For example, “the Associated Press wire service distributed two stories on August 30, 2005. In one, a White couple is shown wading through floodwater and the caption reads "Two residents wade through chest-deep water after finding bread and soda from a local grocery store . . ." In the other image, a young Black man is shown in nearly the exact same situation but the caption reads "A young man walks through chest deep flood water after looting a grocery store in New Orleans . . ." The conclusion is that White victims of Katrina found food while Black victims stole food” (Haider). So why didn’t the young Black man find food? This is a part of racism and stereotyping that has been prevalent in society and news coverage for many
The Civil War was fought over the “race problem,” to determine the place of African-Americans in America. The Union won the war and freed the slaves. However, when President Lincoln declared the Emancipation Proclamation, a hopeful promise for freedom from oppression and slavery for African-Americans, he refrained from announcing the decades of hardship that would follow to obtaining the new won “freedom”. Over the course of nearly a century, African-Americans would be deprived and face adversity to their rights. They faced something perhaps worse than slavery; plagued with the threat of being lynched or beat for walking at the wrong place at the wrong time. Despite the addition of the 14th and 15th Amendments to the Bill of Rights, which were made to protect the citizenship of the African-American, thereby granting him the protection that each American citizen gained in the Constitution, there were no means to enforce these civil rights. People found ways to go around them, and thus took away the rights of African-Americans. In 1919, racial tensions between the black and white communities in Chicago erupted, causing a riot to start. This resulted from the animosity towards the growing black community of Chicago, which provided competition for housing and jobs. Mistrust between the police and black community in Chicago only lent violence as an answer to their problems, leading to a violent riot. James Baldwin, an essayist working for true civil rights for African-Americans, gives first-hand accounts of how black people were mistreated, and conveys how racial tensions built up antagonism in his essays “Notes of a Native Son,” and “Down at the Cross.”

The Defender enraged white southerners with its vivid narrative of lynchings and its encouragement of black migration to the North. There were many other editors attacked for publishing their opinions including, J.H. Murphy, J.E. Mitchell of the St Louis Argus, junior editor Cyril Briggs, A. Phillip Randolph and Chandler Owen, and G.W. Bouldin of the San Antonio Inquirer.

Through manipulation and lies, media manages to modify objective news into biased news in order to convince the public of what the media wants them to believe. Comparing Two Sources There are disagreements and agreements between source A and source B. Source A was from a report written by a journalist Humphrey Tyler, who worked for a South African magazine. The report was written later on the same day that the shooting occurred. Source B was from an English newspaper, published the day after the shooting. Source A and source B both agree and disagree with each other over different things.
Our minds have changed from being able to focus and read a lengthy paper, to distracted and skimming for the little highlights to give us information. Media used to be lengthy pages full of information. Now it has turned into short snippets of the bold points in the articles, “Television programs add text crawls and pop-up ads, and magazines and newspapers shorten their articles, introduce capsule summaries, and crowd their pages with easy-to-browse info-snippets” (Carr 5). Media has played on our short attention span and constantly wondering mind by adding bright colors and bold prints to the many stories all around us. The days of one-page articles are over. Now one page turns into five to ten links, three sub-links, and twenty other sidebars.
Racism and discrimination are problems many African Americans had to face in the 1940s; Hughes uses this aspect as the major theme in his poem “Ballad of the Landlord.” It is apparent that the tenant is discriminated against by the landlord, the police and the newspaper. For example, the newspaper shows only one side of the issue especially in the headline: “MAN THREATENS LANDLORD” (31). The tenant’s reasons for threatening the landlord were valid, although not legal, because the landlord treated the tenant unfairly by not fixing the house the tenant was renting. The year is 2006,watching TV, you flip through the various news stations to learn about the recent news in Iraq, the majority of the news simply says that ‘x’ amount of soldiers or marines were killed in such and such attack. You don’t like what you are hearing so you go online to read an independent embedded (embedded refers to news reporters who are attached to military units) reporters story. Online you read that two new schools were built, and the Iraqis, supported by US forces, led an attack to capture an insurgent leader. The big media corporations such as FOX, NBC, CNN, and many others distort the facts that are on the ground. The small, mostly independent, reporters generally try to get a first-hand account of the situation on the ground. They are their alongside the soldiers, sailors, and marines. In some cases these reporters may need to drop their camera or pen and defend themselves. These examples bring many questions that I want to know. The biggest of these questions is how do these different types of reporting, the “main stream media”, and the small independent embedded reporters affect the views that the American people have back home? The reason I chose this topic is that after reading The Good Soldiers and Moment of Truth in Iraq, I was intrigued in the considerable difference between what was wrote in books and what CNN reported on the nightly news.
