This is a comparative analysis that seeks to examine Shakespeare's play, Titus Andronicus, and compare it to several scenes from Julie Taymors’ film, Titus. The main focus is to see whether the film stays true to the play when it comes to violence and dialogue. Both are filled with grotesque scenes that have to do with rape, mutilation, murders and even cannibalism. The most important topics are revenge and violence, for that reason violence is going to be the center of focus in this analysis. Titus Andronicus is known to be Shakespeare's first tragedy, performed around the 1580s. The story is based on fictional Roman general, Titus Andronicus, whose daughter Lavinia is raped and mutilated by Roman Queen Tamoras’ two sons, Chiron and Demetrius. Tamoras eldest son is sacrificed and for that reason she seeks revenge on Titus’ daughter. After Titus figures out who did this atrocity to his daughter, he also strives for revenge against Tamora. Titus is an Italo-American film produced by Julie Taymor in 1999 that has a total duration of 162 mins, based on the Shakespearean play. The way that Taymor presents violence is new, in the sense that she is not afraid of making scenes that to the eye can be disturbing, nor does she try to mask bloody scenes from the public eye either, she does quite the opposite.
