As with any book to film adaptation, there are bound to be some changes made to suit both the filmmakers and audience’s taste. With many film adaptions, changes are seen in characters, scenes, and the main purpose can differ as well. In the movie, Thor, Marvel creates the world of Asgard and it’s characters with some similarities to the Norse mythology. In the movie, Thor is the conceited son of Odin who is destined to rule Asgard, but before he can claim his thrown he rekindles a war between enemies. As punishment, Odin banishes Thor to Earth where he is rendered powerless. He is humbled by a group of humans and where there is a threat against both Earth and Asgard, Thor learns the true meaning of being a leader. The characters in the
Throughout this unit we’ve been reading about technology, fantasy worlds, time travel, and virtual reality. In this essay I’m going to discuss the stories “A Sound of Thunder” and “Nethergrave.” I will give a brief synopsis of each story, as well as, compare and contrast the works with each other.
Courage, selflessness, justice, and humility are all characteristics of epic heroes have exhibited. Both Beowulf and Shrek show the qualities of epic heroes. Beowulf is a brave warrior, and he is a wise king of the Geat’s. Shrek is an ogre that lives in a secluded forest and cannot express his emotions, but he is kind hearted and tries not to hurt anyone. Beowulf and Shrek are epic heroes because they receive assistance from allies, face supernatural foe, and reach lowest points where they appear defeated.
Beowulf embodies several respectable traits that make him an epic hero, but there is another hero that possesses even better traits. Her name is Diana, but is known as Wonder Woman; she comes from an island in the Amazons called Themyscira. Although Beowulf and Wonder Woman has similar qualities, there are several that make them different.

What is hero? A hero, under the Merriam-Webster definition, is a person who is admired for brave/great acts or fine qualities. This is a very broad definition that combines both ancient and modern belief of what --or who-- a hero should be. Beowulf is an epic poem that focuses on an Anglo-Saxon hero. As such he embodies the traits that his culture valued most. Deadpool, on the other hand, portrays the most recent ideas of what traits a hero should embody. With these examples from contrasting periods, we are still able to see similarities and differences that shows how modern and Anglo-Saxon idea of heroism reflects its culture.

Superman and Beowulf both exhibit these characteristics. The differences between Beowulf and Superman are as obvious as their similarities.

For example, one member of the Avengers who goes by the title of Ant Man has the ability to either grow or shrink at will. Ordinary people would not be able to pull off a feat such as this. The Hulk is extraordinary because he is a large green man that possesses monstrous strength that is on par with that of Thor's strength. Thor is a war god that was widely worshipped throughout Scandinavia. He is the protector of the the realm of the gods, riding through the heavens on a chariot harnessed to two he-goats, bringing thunder and lighting with him. His strength is unmatched; he even has a belt that doubles his power. True to the namesake of the film, Thor is the protagonist. The biggest change Thor faces in this film is that he now a clean-shaven blonde instead of a bearded red-head. Aside from physical appearances, Thor’s personality as a god is similar to the Thor in Norse mythology. As exemplified in the Lay of Thrym, Thor travels to Jotunheim with Loki and several other gods, although this time he is not dressed as a woman and he carries Mjolnir with him. In the film, Loki appears to act as a voice of reason by attempting to deescalate Thor’s impending anger towards the Giants recent trespassing into Asgard. Despite there being a supposed truce between Laufey, leader of the Giants, and Odin, Thor does not condone the Giant’s actions and wishes to wage war. This parallels Loki’s sentiments at the end of Lokasenna where he states, “I will go outside for you alone, because I know that you will fight [or kill]” (Acker 180), demonstrating Thor’s impulsiveness and perceived violent
The Shakespearean playwrights Macbeth and Hamlet are both very well-known tragedies. They have many things in common but are different in some ways. Both plays involve greed but the characters are different. There are some characters that have the same qualities such as Hamlet and Malcolm who both killed for revenge. Macbeth and Hamlet are different in character even though they both killed. The tragedies are the same in that many people are killed but the reasons are very different. Macbeths need for power has caused him to lose control while Hamlets need for revenge causes him to lose his own life.
