The bridge, Prince Edward Viaduct located in Toronto, Ontario and the Roman bridge, Pont du Gard, located in Vers-Pnt-du-Gard, Gard, France, are both arch bridges that were both built using the development of an arch. The arches on Prince Edward Viaduct and Pont du Gard provide flexibility and assists the overall stability of the structure. Although, the Roman arch bridge was built in 1st c BCE, the arch structure have been improved and was used to built the Prince Edward Viaduct, that was opened in 1918.
“It was designed with a twenty-two foot roadway and one five-foot sidewalk” (Silver). The silver bridge is a very long bridge. “An eye-bar is a long steel plate having large circular ends with an "eye" or hole through which a pin is used to connect to other eyebars (to make a chain) or to other parts of the bridge.” according to Richard Fields. The whole bridge was built using the eye-bar suspension.
The Bailey Island Bridge is located in Harpswell, Maine on Route 24. Before the making of the bridge, the fishermen that lived on Bailey’s Island wanted a bridge that connected their island to Orr’s Island. The town of Harpsweell made and voted on their decisions in the weekly town meetings (“Bailey”). The project was stalled because of some of the mainlanders in the town, but it was brought back up for discussion in 1912. They first agreed on a “road” which would connect the two islands and would be constructed with timber. This was to cost $3,000. The cost quickly reached $25,000 at a later town meting because they decided to build the bridge with stone and concrete instead. Once the legislature decided to pass a bill stating that it would fun state’s highway and bridge projects, they decided to move forward with the project (Hansen, 36).
The United States of America is fast approaching the peak of its existence. Technology has advanced by leaps and bounds and continues to do so and politically the United States is far more advanced than most countries in the world today. The Ancient Roman Empire was also at its peak before coming to a sharp decline, resulting in a fallen world power that to this day is no more than a figment of the past, a shadow that lurks behind the civilizations of today. Per contra, is the United States truly so far apart from this shadow? Or will the same fate come to us sooner than we imagine? Let us examine for a moment just how similar the U.S. and Ancient Rome are to each other, and if the same cataclysmic events that resulted in the fall or Rome could be possible in our own society.
The Arch of Septimius Severus is one of the most triumphal and boldest arches in all of Ancient Rome. Paid for and dedicated to Septimius Severus, council of the time, the arch is built in brick and travertine and clad with marble slabs. This arch still stands tall to this day in the southern end of the Roman Forum. (a forum is a rectangular plaza surrounded by the ruins of several important ancient government buildings at the center of the City of Rome). It was built to commemorate the Roman victories against the Parthians and as propaganda in support for the Roman military campaigns taking place in the early 2nd Century.
The Jericho Covered Bridge in Kingsville, Maryland was built in 1865 and restored in 1982. The bridge is 100 feet long and cased in cedar planks and timber beams. Legend has it that after the Civil War many lynchings occurred on the bridge. Passersby were supposedly captured on the bridge and hung from the upper rafters. The bridge is very close to my house and I have driven over it several times. The storyteller, age 19, also lives a couple minutes away from the bridge. He has lived in Kingsville, Maryland his entire life. He recalled a dramatic story he had heard from his older brother involving the haunted bridge.

The Romans were on one of the greatest people of all. They had power, wealth, and even a half of the world. They built one of the strongest and vast empire that world has ever seen. Eddie is the common man, not the self-made man or even the desperate fledgling. He is a typical lower-middle class citizen just calling it like he sees it. Unfortunately, he only accepts what he wants to, instead of what could benefit him the most: an open mind.
