The lords and ladies of the Middle Ages were individuals who people were dependent upon. They needed some help of their own as well. Their castle’s in which they owned and lived in needed to be taken care of, so the lords and ladies hired serfs to do the work. The system is called manorialism and it is when peasants and serfs would do work in the lord’s estate or castle. The lord and lady with their families, lived in the part of the castle called the keep which had things like the great hall and the dance hall. The castle provided a home for a bunch of servants and knights as well. The lords and ladies were to dress in bright colors and long jackets. This showed that they were wealthy and ultimately better and higher up than those of the Middle Ages. Jewelry and fur were an important part of the fashion as well as what is called Damask. Damask was the cloth used for a lot of clothing. A law was put into place that peasants must wear cheap clothing because the wealthy worried that commoners would dress like them. The clothing acted as a person’s place or ranking above another.

The guests did not eat with any silverware or even as far as a plate. Chefs would cook dried vegetables, salted meat, and bread almost every meal. To add to the meal entertainment came with music and acrobats. The meals served as an importance during the Middle Ages. Surviving back in this time period was difficult for many. A lot of babies baptized right away to ensure their survival. Carrying the family name was a value for many and that's why boys were more preferred rather than girls.
