Both novels The Book Thief and Frankenstein, are told in very unusual narrative perspectives. The Book Thief is told by an innocent child who just arrived to Germany and is experiencing war for the first time. On the other hand, Frankenstein, is told by an outside character named Walton, who is basically repeating the story of Victor Frankenstein he had heard from the source. Although, both novels have an interesting narrative, the reader has to decide whether to believe what he/she is reading from these strangers.

The creature became very attached to his creator, Frankenstein, but when Frankenstein wanted nothing to do with him and ran afraid the creature vowed revenge. Also, the creature became very attached to the family in the cabin, who he learned from, but they too expected the worst of him based on looks. Frankenstein had the opportunity to make the situation better by attempting to accept him, because he genuinely was a good person, just not the society norm, but he blew it. Frankenstein’s absent “parenting” made the creature become what everyone feared he already was, a monster. After not taking responsibility, Frankenstein began his fate and started to lose everyone he cared about. Everything Frankenstein did, like denying the creature and not teaching him about the world, only made the creature angry with him. The one thing Frankenstein did take responsibility for was deciding not to create a second creature and therefore, risking his own life. Frankenstein only took the responsibility for his actions at the end of novel when he should have taken it at the beginning. As Frankenstein is enroute to his pursuit of gaining more knowledge, he states, “I wished, as it were, to procrastinate all that related to my feelings of affection until the great object, which swallowed up every habit of my nature, should be completed” (Shelley 41). The creature was created with the intention of goodness and purity but because of this, he wasn’t equipped to deal with the rejection of his creator. After Victor Frankenstein’s death, Robert Walton walks in to see the creature standing over his friend’s lifeless body.
The creature displays his hatred toward Frankenstein for leaving him immediately and not providing guidance and protection in this harsh, new world by murdering his family and friends. While seeking his creator, the creature first murders Victor Frankenstein’s youngest brother William and exclaims, “I too can create desolation; my enemy is not invulnerable; this death will carry despair to him, and a thousand other miseries shall torment and destroy him” (Shelley 144). The creature wishes for Victor Frankenstein to suffer taking his own companions away, forcing him to be miserable as well by destroying his personal relationships with others by murdering loved ones. Both characters from the novels Prometheus and Victor Frankenstein were similar because they were both intelligent. When the family moved out of their cottage, the creature decided to go on his own adventure and seek out his creator. Upon doing so, the creature encountered a young girl who was about to drown near a lake. When the creature successfully saved the little girl, an older man confronted the creature and shot him in the shoulder. As a romantic novel Victor is responsible, because he abandoned his creation. As an archetype novel, Victor is the villain, because he was trying to play god. Finally, Victor as a Gothic novel, Victor is at fault, because, he and the creature are two different parts of the same person. In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Victor Frankenstein and the monster that he creates are very similar. For example, Victor creates the monster to be like himself. Another similarity is that the anger of both Victor and the monster is brought about by society. One more parallel between Victor and the monster is that they both became recluses. These traits that Victor and the monster possess show that they are very similar.
An idea becomes a vision, the vision develops a plan, and this plan becomes an ambition. Unfortunately for Victor Frankenstein, his ambitions and accomplishments drowned him in sorrow from the result of many unfortunate events. Of course the first action and link in the chain is started by Victor Frankenstein.
The creature is isolated from all of society but unlike most people he was not raised by a parent or anyone who had parental influence on him. This made it difficult for him to understand why people were afraid of him and left him alone. Thus he didn’t know right from wrong or how to act properly. Frankenstein is a fictional story written by Mary Shelly. It was later adapted into a movie version directed by James Whales. There are more differences than similarities between the book and the movie. This is because, the movie is mainly based on the 1920’s play, other than the original Mary Shelly’s book Frankenstein. A text has to be altered in one way or the other while making a movie due to a number of obvious factors. A lot of details from the book were missing in the movie, but the changes made by Whales were effective as they made the movie interesting, and successful.
In conclusion, Victor Frankenstein is to blame for the actions of the creature, which was brought about by its rejection. Victor became obsessive in his work, but when his creation was complete he fully rejected it causing the creature to lead a life of solitude. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley portrays an individual in a unique situation trying to overcome daily interactions while being faced with inconceivable misfortunes. Created by Victor Frankenstein, who set out on a journey to bring life to scrapped pieces of waste, he was then abandoned and left to fend for himself in a world he was abruptly brought into. After being abandoned by his creator for his less than appealing looks, this then sparked his inevitable desire for revenge. The monster’s behavior stems from Victor’s actions at the beginning of his life and therefore is not to blame. The creature in Frankenstein is deserving of sympathy even though he committed those murders because the lack of parental guidance, lack of family, and lack of someone to love led him to that. All in all his actions were not malicious, but only retaliation for what he had been put through.
