The Plague and the Crusades of the Dark Ages vs the arts and the sciences that evolved from the Renaissance cover a vast span of time. The Middle Ages and the Italian Renaissance represent two distinctly different yet related periods of time in regards to their culture and themes. Medieval Times revolved around the rulers and the nobles who could become educated and maintain their influential status and the serfs were mostly unheard from due to the majority being unable to write. This changed with the Renaissance when education became more valued by all and the base level of knowledge was higher; the peasants and lower class could now use knowledge to think for themselves. Culturally, the Medieval times revolved around the feudal system and reliance on ones community and the Renaissance revolved around the individual and humanistic ideas. The difference in the Middle ages and the Renaissance stems from the background living situations of each time period. Medieval Times were dark and dangerous because of famine, plague, and constant war, all of which contributed to the rise of dependents. A serf or peasant could not survive without a lord or noble controlling them in order to be protected. In the Middle Ages valued Catholicism and being good to achieve perfection in heaven, but during the Renaissance Neoplatonics thought that they could achieve perfection in this life. Renaissance men studied the humanities to hone their speech and reasoning, while the Medieval knights focused on idolizing women and finding a wife.
