Somehow, both societies had laws to follow even though although, in Omelas they were a few but they were not outlined. Omelas society wanted to be a “free” city from the tyranny of certain leaders like priests and government. Whereas on The Giver, they were really strict with their community, having curfew rules besides, they couldn't touch anyone if they were not part of their “family” and only in their houses. In contrast to Omelas where they could easily wander the streets and even participated in sexual activities. In Omelas they were all happy and “mature people” many of them were superstitious, believing in incongruous things. In The Giver, a narrative by Lois Lowry, Jonas’s father illustrates his feelings during his Ceremony of Twelve and Jonas tells about his own feelings concerning the forthcoming event. In the text it states, “‘But to be honest, Jonas,’ his father said, ‘for me there was not the element of suspense that there is with your ceremony. Because I was already fairly certain of what my Assignment was to be,’”(Lowry, paragraph 3). This segment of text elucidates the reason of Jonas’s father’s lack of surprise of his Assignment. The Giver and Matched are both futuristic societies with a lot of rules. In The Giver the Elders choose their match as well as their children. Jonas starts loving Fiona but isn’t allowed and stops taking the pill. In Matched the officials choose their match but they can have their own children. Cassia is matched with Xander but also loves Ky and doesn't know what to do. In both story they all get jobs for the rest of their lives but in Matched they just call it vocations. Jonas gets the Receiver of memory and Cassia is supposed to be the sorter.
The city of Omelas is the most magical, idyllic place anyone’s imagination could possibly conjure. The people live happily, with everything they want and need, and most importantly without pain, evil, without monarchy, slavery, the stock exchange, the advertisement, the secret police and the bomb. Yet, the people are not simple minded, but rather are “mature, intelligent, passionate adults whose lives [are] not wretched” and “their children [are], in fact, happy”.
This book is about a community where everything is stainless. It is a blank world with no color or feelings. At the ceremony of Twelve, everyone is accepting their Life Assignments as they are going to the path of maturity. However, a boy named Jonas is instructed a special job with The Giver to learn about the power of feelings and lies. When he puts his power at his own risk, he gets his family and everyone he loves in danger.
In Ursula Le Guin’s short story, “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas”, it is stated that, “...the health of their children, the wisdom of their scholars, the skill of their makers, even the abundance of their harvest and the kindly weathers of their skies, depend wholly on this child’s abominable misery.” The city of Omelas is utopian on the outside, with grand architecture, extravagant festivals, and a joyful citizenry. The reason for its perfection is much darker, however. The constant neglect and suffering of a small child balances out the good in the society, and if not for the child’s suffering, Omelas would crumble. In some ways, Omelas is similar to the world of today. People around the world, especially children, suffer for what some would say is the greater good, working in factories and mines, and endangering their lives by serving in the military. At first glance, it may seem that the world is very similar to Omelas, or that it is in danger of becoming like it. Omelas is described as a city in a fairy tale. It is a city towered by sea and encircled by mountains and has a cheerful sweetness of the air. It has beautiful public buildings and spacious private homes with red roof and painted walls, magnificent farmer markets, green parks and avenues of trees. Omelas is a very prosperous city. It has every bit of luxury, comfort and exuberance that it can offer its residents. Even in the text it is urged to imagine Omelas: “O miracle! but I wish I could describe it better. I wish I could convince you. Omelas sounds in my words like a city in a fairy tale, long ago and far away, once upon a time. Perhaps it would be best if you imagined it as your own fancy bids, assuming it will rise to the occasion, for certainly I cannot suit you all” (Le Guin; Page-2). Though much emphasis is put on the natural beauty of Omela’s people and its environment, a lot remains to show its darker side which is hidden from the innocence of the kids until they reach the age of 10 (Le, Guin, 65). This is a total contrast to the lovely exhibition of the city and its harmony. It indicates a cruel society that exposes a child of years to unnatural suffering because of utopic beliefs that the success of the town is tied to the kid suffering. Other members of the town leave Omela in what seems like the search for an ideal city other than Omela. But do they get it?
In "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" author Ursula K. Le Guin uses the utopian society of Omelas to symbolically highlight the ugly and unsavory state of the human condition. The stories unidentified narrator paints a colorful picture of Omelas and ironically describes its residents as happy, joyous and not at all barbaric. Although Le Guin describes Omelas as a delightful even whimsical place that affords its citizens “…happiness, the beauty of their city, the tenderness of their friendships, the health of the of their children, the wisdom of their scholars, the skill of their makers, even the abundance of their harvest and the kindly weather of their skies”; we come to discover just the opposite (5). At its core we find a self-indulgent and horrid community distractingly veiled by beautiful landscape, the music and prancing horses at festivals and children playing. The author cleverly draws the reader into Omelas’ city limits then abruptly exposes them to the widely known atrocity that is the abused and malnourished child beneath. Le Guins’ skillful exposition of Omelas and its residents is an excellent illustration of mankind’s abandonment of morality and human compassion of mankind in exchange for the unrelenting pursuit of happiness.
In doing this it creates this idea around Omelas as this happy, peaceful utopian society that seems wonderful to live in. There are no cars or advanced technology like central heating or washing machines but the people in Omelas are happy and live in comfort and they don’t base this happiness on technology or possessions like today's society. This is because they life on the principle of what the narrator says in par. 2 “Happiness is based on a just discrimination of what is necessary” but even though they people of Omelas follow this ideology, they still live a complex life like we do in our society. “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” challenges our country's economic style of government from capitalism to communism economics. This is shown in the “economy is not based on competition - so no stock markets or advertisements” (James's, 93) for products that they make. This challenges our economic style of government because this is the total opposite of how our economy works, in a capitalist economy, anyone can start a business and with the right hard work they can become as successful as they
Throughout the history of the world, there has been many societies. All these societies had similar structures and ideas, but they all are different by their own special traditions and ways of life. Similarly, both our society and the society in The Giver share similar ideas, but they are different in certain areas. For example, they both celebrate birthdays and have family units, but they have their own way of doing so. Based on the celebration of birthdays and the formation of family units, our society is better than the society in The Giver by Lois Lowry.
In conclusion the “short story” “The ones who walk away from Omelas” and The Giver film, both had similar societies with different ways to see life. They are good examples of selfishness and arrogance between people. The film and the “short story” turned out to be an aberration as societies. In the book The Giver by Lois Lowry, no one has seen a rainbow after a storm, no one knew what colors were; what choosing was; what it meant to be an individual. Everyone lived in complete Sameness, and never learned what it meant to be an individual. By eliminating as much self expression as possible in Sameness and society, Jonas's community has rejected the individuality of a society where people are free to move society forward. Many older plays or movies are remade to appeal to a different age of people. These renditions often follow the same story line with only subtle differences to be more appealing. Many of Shakespeare’s plays have been made into movies to enhance the studying or understanding of his plays. An example of this would be Othello which has been created into a movie called “O”. Othello and “O” both follow the same story line. The similarities between them make "O" an excellent rendition of the play. The story in The Giver by Lois Lowry takes place in a community that is not normal. People cannot see color, it is an offense for somebody to touch others, and the community assigns people jobs and children. This unnamed community shown through Jonas’ eye, the main character in this novel, is a perfect society. There is no war, crime, and hunger. Most readers might take it for granted that the community in The Giver differs from the real society. However, there are several affinities between the society in present day and that in this fiction: estrangement of elderly people, suffering of surrogate mothers, and wanting of euthanasia.
