A tragic hero is shown in both the plays Oedipus the King and Antigone written by Sophocles. Oedipus and Antigone are both tragic heroes with many similarities and differences. Antigone, however is more of a true modern hero rather than an ancient Greek tragic hero. Oedipus is self-confident, intelligent, and strong willed. Ironically these are the very traits which bring about his tragic discovery. Antigone is a strong person and will not give into orders. She doesn 't care what happens to her because the most important thing to her is that she does what is the right thing to do hence her brother may have a good after life. Antigone feels that all people even her brother deserved a proper burial; "with all honorable observances due to the dead” (Antigone, 127). Oedipus is also as noble as Antigone is. Both characters were born into a very noble family. They were at the top of society, and had a perfect life, or so it seemed. Their flaws led them to experience tragic downfalls. With Antigone, her stubbornness, led her to be sentenced to death by Creon. Oedipus was too arrogant to believe in the prophecy against him, and he ended up fulfilling it. Then these tragic downfalls lead to the death, or serious injuries. Antigone committed suicide to avoid being killed by Creon. Oedipus blinded himself by stabbing out his own eyes because he was so angry with himself for fulfilling the prophecy. Therefore, both Antigone and Oedipus lived their lives as tragic heroes. The plays Antigone and Oedipus Rex have some major differences, but they have one similarity that ties their main characters together, which is them both being born tragic heroes. In order to determine whether Antigone is the tragic hero, one will have to answer the question, what is a tragic hero? According to Aristotle, “The tragic hero is a character of noble stature and has greatness, he/she is not perfect, the hero's downfall and it is partially his/her own fault, and the hero's misfortunate is not wholly deserved.” (Aristotle) Antigone is a tragic hero because she has a high social standing in Thebes, she neither good nor bad, and her suffering appears to be unjust and unfair to the audience.
A detective story is a genre of fiction in which a person attempts to solve a crime. The detective may be a professional or an amateur, and generally has nothing to gain from solving the crime. Even though each epic is different in its plot, every epic has certain features in common. The prime example of their similarities is their main character, the hero of the epic. In both these tales, the powerful gods enormously affect their decisions and the consequences they eventually have to face.

Fourth, the hero recognizes his or her responsibility. Fifth, the story ends with a catastrophe. The catastrophe either may be an emotional event, this even may be a death.

The main theme for Antigone is that people sometimes have to learn the hard way from their mistakes. This theme is expressed in the final four lines of the play. They read, There is no happiness where there is no wisdom; No wisdom but in submission to the gods. Big words are always punished, and proud men of old age learn to be wise.
Creon does not learn a lesson from Oedipus' accusatory behavior. Instead he adapts this bad personality trait. Throughout Antigone, he accuses everyone who tries to give him advice of betraying him. Whereas, in Oedipus, he is falsely accused by Oedipus of trying to take over the throne.
