The marches in Selma Alabama, 1968 and Ferguson Missouri, 2015 are similar and different. These two marches can be best compared between their cause, content and the subsequent violence. While both events were marches for the lives of people they were very different. However, Selma’s March was for the right and freedom to vote without deterrence from the white community and law enforcement. Ferguson’s march was for the death of a young black man who was shot and killed after being chased by the police. Furthermore the content of the marches were different although they were for the civil rights of citizens. Conclusively Fergusons protest turned into a violent conduct in the streets preceding the rage of families who were not convinced that the police officer was truly not guilty and deserved no sentence or charge. On the contrary the 1968 marches in Selma Alabama did not turn to violent uprising in the cities in towns just people who rallied together for people’s rights and freedoms nevertheless the violence used against those who wanted to march the innocent people were bludgeoned, shot, and beaten because they did not want the blacks too be able too vote. To stifle the spread of the ‘contagion,’ the article, “Four Students Spark Spreading Drive,”sites how the “good performance of the Southern police” is what “prevented chaos.” [v] By using a favorable term to describe the white institutions, the article works to label police as an admirable unit who selflessly suppressed anarchy. This is contrasted with the ‘chaos’ utilized to describe the sit-in protestors. In making this comment, the article implies that the protests harm society rather than help it. Moreover, words like “contagion” and “chaos” are also utilized to condemn the black’s entitlement to protests; once again, the media plays on white fears that whites might stand to lose their sense of entitlements if they allow minorities to have the same rights as they do. The diction used by the Chicago Defender’s article parallels the word choice of Harold L. Keith’s article, “Are White Supremacists Killing Labor?”, which is about the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Triggered by the arrest of Rosa Parks, the NAACP organized the Boycott to change segregation laws regarding bus seats and driver courtesy toward people of color. Without examining this event within its historical context the media publicity and iconic ‘I Have a Dream’ speech can easily overshadow progress that was already underway in America. It was insisted by prominent civil rights activist Ella Baker, ‘the movement made Martin rather than Martin making the movement.’ What is important not to overlook is the significant change that took place in the United States during the previous 100 years. Such that, many influential figures in support of racial equality opposed the March. The Civil Rights Act proposed by President Kennedy in 1963 was already in the legislative process. On the first day of the march, nicknamed Bloody Sunday, the activists made it to the Edmund Pettus Bridge before being stopped and brutally beaten by police officers. The activists persevered after the beatings, returning the two days later chanting “we’re gonna march!” (March Book Three 212). Their hope far outweighed any fear of being beaten again. The Selma marches were marches and protests held in 1965 that are regarded as the peak of the American civil rights movement. They were three marches from Selma to the Alabama capitol of Montgomery. The marches grew out of the voting rights movement in Selma, started by locals who formed the Dallas County Voters League. The best known march was the first one, which was named Bloody Sunday due to the response of the officers on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. The Selma Marches led to many advances in the civil rights movement and got the black civil movement really fired up.
Over 200,000 demonstrators participated in the March on Washington in the nation’s capital on August 28, 1963. The purpose of the march was to gain civil rights for African Americans. There was a wide diversity in those who participated, with a quarter of all the demonstrators being white (Ross). Even southern people came to contribute, which caused them to be harassed and threatened for coming to the march. The March on Washington became a very successful event for the rights of African Americans, and amended several peoples’ view-points towards the topic, even President John Kennedy’s.

Both the Washington march and the Selma march were trying to end segregation in the South before it got any worse. Martin Luther King Jr. was a big part of both marches. Both marches played an important part of the civil rights movement in the late 50s and the early 60s. The March on Washington was the biggest march in the civil rights movement in the 1960s and it was bigger than the Selma to Montgomery march.
