Hurricanes and Blizzards are some of the most severe storms that the US experiences. They cause problems for millions of people for many days. A blizzard is classified by its wind and time. Winds of 35 mph or more along with a quarter mile or less visibility must last for three hours or more. A hurricane is simply classified by wind speed and precipitation. Wind speeds classify hurricanes into five different categories, and is accompanied by rain. Hurricanes and blizzards have similar winds and heavy precipitation, but vary in when they occur, the type of precipitation, and the impact that they have on people. Blizzards and Hurricanes occur in different times of the year. Most blizzards occur in the winter in the northern hemisphere. Exact days vary, but most blizzards in our area occur from December to February. Hurricanes occur mostly during the late summer months and early fall months. The Atlantic Hurricane season officially runs from June 1st to November 30th. Hurricanes hold a lot of rain, picking it up as it builds over the ocean, and then dropping it on land. A blizzard usually picks up over the West Coast and moves onto the Midwest, dropping tons of snow on the way. Other blizzards start off of the great lakes, these blizzards can drop many feet of snow. The cold air moves over the warm bodies of water, the air warms and picks up water vapor. When the air mass moves off of the lakes, it is full of moisture, but it is warm, it then freezes over the cold land, and the snow falls.
