As a result, characters in the stories end up dying because they cannot handle the pressure of being alone. After being convinced by her husband, Armand, that she is a child of black ancestry, Desiree becomes depressed. Along with this development, knowing her husband no longer loves her nor the child, it pushes her to leave and kill herself and the child.
