Democratic vs. Republican During election times, most individuals are either on the democratic or republican side. Some people are willing to change sides based on who will best fulfill their political views, while others will always be democratic or republican and never change. Democrats and republicans are the same in a few ways but have many different views; some of which are taxes, gun control, healthcare, immigration, and abortion. This year, 2016, I have listened to quarrel debates, heard rumors about candidates, and have seen different protests on social media because of the election that just occurred. As this election has come to a conclusion, I have learned much more about the government and numerous dissimilarities between democrats and republicans. First, there are some social issues that unquestionably contrast among republicans and democrats. Republicans are very conservative on many of these issues. Republicans believe they need a system to verify that illegal immigrants do not retrieve the same benefits that legal citizens get. They finance sturdier implementation actions at the border. Also, republicans don’t want illegal immigrants to be delivered emancipation because it will just encourage more people to immigrate illegally. On the other side, democrats believe in administering passageways to citizenship for immigrants that came here illegally. Although they want illegal immigrants to become citizens, democrats want actions to take place beforehand like receiving a penalty, paying taxes, learning English, and clearing up the law. Outraged citizens had a great deal of tension before his term, but when he entered into office those feelings of frustration arose. The Americans commenced to contradicting the ideas and beliefs of their counterparts, these hostile events eventually lead to the clashing of the citizens. Violence and gun control laws are strongly correlated for both political parties, but inversely so. Whereas Democrats believe lessening crime requires stricter gun control laws, Republicans believe lessening crime requires less strict gun control laws. Due to Diffen website, one dominant in the Southeastern United States, is now strongest in the Northeast, and Democratic candidates have been faring better in some southern states. Also, Democrats are liberal and left-leaning. They tend to favor an active role for government in society. The party has united with smaller liberal regional parties throughout the country, such as the Farmer-Labor Party in Minnesota.
The political views of the federalist and the republicans towards the government of the United States of America were different. The republicans stressed equality of rights among citizens allowing people to govern themselves. The federalists believed in a stronger government one in which was sovereign and had superior power over the local governments.
Foreign policy is another major topic that Democrats and Republicans have strong views about. In a situation where the military may be required, Democrats approve of targeted strikes and the restriction of manpower. Republicans approve of a more intense military with more soldiers.
In the United States we are divided by the left and right side on the political spectrum; even further divided into political parties such as Republicans, on the right, and Democrats, on the left side. These two political parties show philosophical differences through their viewpoints on major topics such as the economy, separation of church and state, abortion, and gun control.
The formation of the Democratic-Republican Party started out as "a loose collection" of members who organized themselves to vote together consistently (Schultz). This unification of the party led to the change of leadership in America when Thomas Jefferson won the presidential election in 1800. The election resulted in the adoption of the Twelfth Amendment because of how well organized the party had become. The "Bloodless Revolution" ended with a tie between two Democratic-Republicans, Jefferson and Aaron Burr, causing the Federalists to cast the deciding vote for Jefferson. As a presidential candidate, Jefferson "carried politics to the people", in the form of publications and the use of newspapers (Schultz).
The United States, comprised of much political diversity, has only two major political parties, the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. The Republican Party was founded by anti-slavery activists on March 20th, 1854, and is represented by its mascot, the elephant. Often referred to as the “Grand Old Party”, or GOP, Republicans favor customs that exude traditional Christian values with a platform based on American Conservatism. As a Christian myself, the values I share with Republican ideals are a main reason I side with the Republican Party.
Economics is the study of currency and how it is made and distributed through our economy. Taxation is one of those main issues in this category. The Democrats and Republicans both consider taxation a major issue but both have different ways they are trying to deal with the problem. The Democrats believe that extending tax cuts to the middle class families of America that make less than 250,000$ a year while raising taxes on the extremely wealthy and huge corporations to help parents pay for college (“Democrats Unveil”). While the Republican Party says it would “try to eliminate taxes on interest, dividends and capital gains altogether for lower and middle-income taxpayers also would work to repeal the estate tax and the alternative minimum tax” (“Democrats Unveil”). They both want to change the tax policy to try to help pay off our debt and or help Americans to live an easier life. Another Key issue in this category is Medicare. Today, political parties can be seen throughout everyday life, prevalent in various activities such as watching television, or seeing signs beside the road while driving. These everyday occurrences make the knowledge of political parties commonly known, especially as the two opposing political parties: the Republicans and the Democrats. Republican and Democrats have existed for numerous years, predominantly due to pure tradition, and the comfort of the ideas each party presents. For years, the existence of two political parties has dominated the elections of the president, and lower offices such as mayor, or the House of Representatives. Fundamentally, this tradition continues from the very emergence of political parties during the election of 1796, principally between Federalist John Adams and Anti-federalist Thomas Jefferson. Prior to this election people unanimously conformed to the ideas of one man, George Washington, and therefore did not require the need for political parties.1 However, following his presidency the public was divided with opposing opinions, each arguing the best methods to regulate the country. Ultimately, the emergence of different opinions regarding the future of the United States involving the economy, foreign relations, ‘the masses,’ and the interpretation of the Constitution, led to the two political parties of the 1790s and the critical election of 1800.
The battle between the Democrats and the Republicans is a battle that has gone on ever since the 1900s. The only way that a political party can take over the house is if they are able to address the issues that relevant to the people. Now that elections are around the corner, many candidates are bringing up issues that have been affecting America for a while and how they are going to change it for the better. Republicans want border security to be the main focus and top priority for the first proceeding, and democrats want to help the immigrants out with the process of becoming legal immigrants if their standards meet the qualifications, to proceed first. Over the years republicans and democrats have stayed lobbying for immigration bill; however, the political parties have different viewpoints on application of the bill. The republicans and democrats want to help immigration as one but at different periods.
Politics is one of the most debated topics in the country today. With the wide variety of values present in America, it is bound to be a difficult topic to discuss. I’ve grown up in a family of democrats with religiously republican grandparents. Considering myself an Independent leaning democratic, I can usually calmly talk politics with my family. This year’s election has made any conversation surrounding politics toxic to my family and creates a large argument of one side or the other and no in between.
