The Hypocritical Behaviors of Wickham and Collins in Pride and Prejudice
In the novel Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen illustrates both Mr. Collins and Mr. Wickham as self-obsessed hypocrites whose words are always contradicted by their behavior and actions. Both Collins and Wickham are seen to be hypocritical in almost every action they do throughout the novel. Similarly, both characters find marriage extremely important even though it is for the wrong reasons. On the other hand, Collins and Wickham differ in that each has very different luck with woman.

One main difference is that although both are stuck in empty marriages, each man has very different luck with women. Mr. Collins cannot even get his own cousin to marry him, which would enable her to lessen her family 's financial burdens. In contrast, Wickham always seems to be followed by a crowd of admirers. Elizabeth, normally a very sensible girl, is fooled and flattered by him, and her sisters follow suit. Secondly, Mr. Collins and Mr. Wickham are different in that Mr. Wickham is extremely bold and confident of himself, whereas Collins is awkward and boorish when speaking to others. Wickham is seen to be extremely bold in that he uses his charm to insinuate himself into the lives of others. This behavior is explicitly seen when he is talking to Elizabeth at the Philips’s dinner party when he willingly tells Elizabeth about his past relations with Darcy. However, Collins is very different in that he is seen to be boorish and socially awkward, partly due to his lack of charisma and good looks. His lack of social skills is overtly seen when Collins goes to speak with Mr. Darcy even though it was considered rude to initiate a conversation with somebody of a higher
